STATESBORO, Ga. — Tennessee Tech saw its early momentum slip away Saturday afternoon as Georgia Southern used a late offensive surge to hand the Golden Eagles a 14-4 run-rule loss in seven innings at J.I. Clements Stadium.
The defeat drops Tennessee Tech to 7-7 overall, while Georgia Southern improved to 3-11 as the Eagles evened the three-game series at one game apiece. The rubber match is scheduled for Sunday, Mar. 8, at 12 p.m. CT.
The Golden Eagles briefly grabbed control of the contest in the third inning. Cade Fuller led off the frame with a double and later came around to score. Eddie Garza added a sacrifice fly later in the inning to give Tech a 2-1 advantage.
Georgia Southern responded immediately in the bottom half of the inning with two runs to retake the lead before adding four more runs in the fourth to stretch the advantage.
Tech answered with two runs in the fifth inning to cut the deficit to 7-4. Luke Bragga and Fuller each scored during the frame, with Landon Smelser delivering an RBI for the Golden Eagles.
However, the Eagles pulled away late, plating four runs in the sixth inning and three more in the seventh to bring the run-rule into effect.
Fuller finished 1-for-2 with a double and two runs scored to lead the Golden Eagles offensively. Smelser, Garza, and Jorsixt Jimenez each drove in a run as Tech totaled six hits and four walks in the contest.
Tech starter Carter Casabella (L, 0-2) was charged with the loss after allowing five runs on nine hits over 3.2 innings. Eli Huddleston, Carson Davis, and Justin Fallon also saw time on the mound for the Golden Eagles.
