James Sofield Named Pitching Coach for Tech Baseball
Tennessee Tech Baseball Head Coach Matt Bragga has named James Sofield Pitching Coach, as announced today by the program.

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. - Tennessee Tech Baseball Head Coach Matt Bragga has named James Sofield Pitching Coach, as announced today by the program.
Coach Sofield joins the Golden Eagles Baseball program after serving in multiple roles with Carson-Newman, including Volunteer Assistant Coach and Recruiting Coordinator, helping sign two Top 50 recruiting classes during his time with the program.
Head Coach Matt Bragga on what Sofield will bring to the coaching staff. "Coach Sofield blew me away during the interview process with his demeanor, knowledge, and enthusiasm!" Coach Bragga continued. "He will make an immediate impact in our program and specifically with our pitching staff!"
Sofield was responsible for a Top 50 National Recruiting Class by Perfect Game in 2023 and 2024 with Carson-Newman. He helped guide 2025 SAC Pitcher and Freshman of the Year Kolton Casson, who was also named NCBWA Second-Team All-American, CCA Second-Team All-American, Rawlings Second-Team All-American, and D2 Baseball Second-Team All-American. He coached nine all-Southern Atlantic Conference (SAC) players over the last three seasons, with three earning First-Team All-Conference honors.
Before joining Carson-Newman in 2021, Sofield served as the Pitching Coach for the Myrtle Beach 8's for one year, while simultaneously performing a Graduate Assistant role with the University of Dubuque from Aug. 2019 to June 2021. He assisted with recruiting, managing the pitching staff and was responsible for recovery plans for the pitchers.
He played college ball for the New Jersey Institute of Technology from 2014-2019, as a member of the A-Sun Conference. He was a member of the AAU USA International Collegiate Team that competed in Ireland and Scotland in 2018.
Sofield earned his Master's Degree in Management with a focus on Sports Management from the University of Dubuque in May 2021, following his Bachelor of Science in Marketing & Entrepreneurship, also earned in May 2019.
