EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Tennessee Tech showed flashes offensively and received solid work out of the bullpen, but SIUE used a big middle innings surge to claim a 6-1 victory in the series opener Friday at Roy E. Lee Field.
The Golden Eagles (9-17, 0-4 OVC) tallied five hits on the evening and broke through in the fifth inning, stringing together quality at-bats to manufacture their lone run. SIUE (12-14, 4-0 OVC) was led by a three-run sixth inning that proved to be the difference, while starter Tim Teixeira earned the win with seven strong innings.
After reaching on an error, Tyler Bennett came around to score on an RBI single from Jorsixt Jimenez, who finished with one of Tech's key offensive knocks.
Jackson Rooker also contributed at the plate with a base hit, while Owen Lee and Landon Smelser each recorded hits as part of a balanced offensive effort. Manny Garza added a hit late in the contest as Tech continued to apply pressure.
On the mound, right-hander Jaxson Pease battled through 5.2 innings, striking out five while limiting SIUE early. The Cougars capitalized in the sixth, but Tech's bullpen provided a bright spot the rest of the way. Drew Mattox delivered 1.1 scoreless innings in relief, keeping the Golden Eagles within striking distance, while Alex Kuntz closed out the final frame.
Defensively, Tech turned in several clean innings behind its pitching staff, and the offense showed patience at times, drawing four walks and putting multiple runners on base in key situations.
