MASON, Ohio – The Tennessee Tech tennis team is right back on the precipice of reaching the top again.
The Golden Eagles are off to the Horizon League Tournament championship match after topping Belmont with a 4-1 victory in Saturday's semifinal. Tech's takedown of the Bruins puts the purple and gold in the conference tournament championship match for the first time since 2023. TTU last won a conference tournament in 2022 in the OVC's final year of men's tennis.
The Golden Eagles (15-7) had dropped their previous two conference tourney tangles with Belmont before getting revenge on Saturday. Overall, Tech has now won eight matches in a row.
After the Bruins (10-12) secured the doubles point with wins in two of the three matchups, the Golden Eagles captured all four completed singles clashes. Tech earned straight-set wins in three of the four showdowns.
Murilo Burckhardt registered a 7-5, 7-6 nod over Moran Woodson in the No. 4 spot, while Ricard Garavi Yepez notched a 6-2, 7-5 victory against Will Ecklund in the No. 5 position and Linus Rohlin collected a 6-3, 6-3 decision over Bautista Durrels Rojo in No. 6.
Diego Munoz was responsible for the purple and gold's other point with a 6-4, 1-6, 6-2 win against Charlie Robin in the No. 4 get-together.
The top two solo tangles did not finish. Alex Alvarez and Stefan Vedovelli each exchanged sets in the No. 1 meeting with Alvarez taking the first, 6-4, and Vedovelli securing the second, 7-6. A similar situation struck Davids Spaks and Sabi Roi in No. 2 as Roi took the first set, 6-1, and Spaks seized the second, 7-6.
Alvarez and Spaks also led Tech to its only doubles nod behind a 6-2 triumph over Sabi Roo and Stefan Vedovelli in the No. 1 gathering.
The other two tandem tussles were both Belmont 7-6 wins. Will Ecklund and Charlie Robin were victorious over Linus Rohlin and Christian Capuccini in No. 2 and Eli Mizerski and Morgan Woodson topped Murilo Burckhardt and Diego Munoz in No. 3.
The Golden Eagles will meet the North Division No. 1 seed Youngstown State in Sunday's championship match. The Penguins picked up a 4-3 win over Tennessee State in the semifinals.
First serve from the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio is slated for 10 a.m. CT.
