COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – An active couple of days in Richmond, Ky. will be the scene for the Tennessee Tech tennis team as the Golden Eagles prepare to play three matches in two days on Thursday and Friday.
Tech will first hit the courts against the host Eastern Kentucky on Thursday at 2 p.m. CT before the Golden Eagles clash with Furman at 8 a.m. CT and Chattanooga at 1 p.m. CT on Friday. All three matches will take place at the Greg Adams Tennis Center in Richmond.
A look at Tennessee Tech
The Golden Eagles (1-4) embark on the busy pair of days following their first win of the spring thanks to a narrow 4-3 nod at Georgia State in the club's last contest on Feb. 7. Tech enjoyed singles wins out of Alex Alvarez, Davids Spaks, Diego Munoz and Murilo Burkhardt. Alvarez's triumph sealed the deal on the victory with the junior out of Barcelona, Spain claiming a three-set win out of the No. 2 to break a 3-3 deadlock and send the purple and gold to the finish line.
Alvarez and Spaks have teamed up to form a nationally-ranked doubles tandem with the pair earning a No. 48 spot in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings. The duo was one of only 10 non- "Power 4" teams to crack the Top 50 and were the only Horizon League partnership to earn a national ranking.
Alvarez and Spaks earned the prestigious position after knocking off the then 12th-ranked tandem in the country with a 6-3 win over Alabama's Andri Zimnokh and Jacob Olar on Jan. 18.
Alabama is one of three "Power 4" opponents Tech has tangled with this season. The Golden Eagles have also squared off with Vanderbilt and Georgia Tech.
A look at Eastern Kentucky
The Colonels (6-8) host Tech on the heels of a three-game losing streak that has seen them drop matches at Dayton and twice at Georgia. Just prior to the slide, EKU won four in a row with nods against North Dakota, Bellarmine, James Madison and Xavier.
Fernando Bulnes is the lone Colonel with a winning singles record behind a team-leading 5-3 solo account. The senior from Badajoz, Spain has done a bulk of the damage out of the No. 2 slot where he is 4-2 this spring.
Bulnes also has the most doubles victories this year with a 5-5 record.
A look at Furman
The Paladins (2-5) connect with Tech following the squad's second win of the season with a 4-2 triumph against William & Mary on Feb. 14. Nico Snyder, Evan Duggal and Nicolas Dispas picked up singles wins, while Furman also seized the doubles point to take the match.
Snyder is leading the Paladins in solo nods thanks to a 3-3 mark. The sophomore from San Juan, Puerto Rico has played all six of his singles tilts in the top position. Snyder is also one of four Paladins with two doubles victories, joining Nicolas Dispas, Alex Han and Finn Pollard with a pair of tandem wins.
A look at Chattanooga
Prior to taking on Tech, the Mocs (1-3) lock up with the University at Tennessee on Wednesday evening. Chattanooga tallied its first win of the season in the club's last clash thanks to a 6-1 win over Tennessee State. UTC has also dropped matches to Gardner-Webb, Georgia Southern and Kennesaw State.
Kristof Kincses and Julian Franzmann sit atop the team's singles leaderboard with identical 3-1 marks. The pair has also combined for a 2-2 doubles record which matches Carther Ramthun and Jaxon Lamb for the best tandem showing so far this spring.
Inside the series
Former members of the same conference, the Golden Eagles hold a 55-20 advantage over Eastern Kentucky. The two schools have not met since they were both members of the OVC with a Tech 5-2 triumph on Mar. 31, 2018 serving as the last showdown between the two.
Furman has won all three previous meetings in the all-time set, including a 4-3 win on Feb. 19, 2023 in the last get-together.
Chattanooga leads the all-time series 35-27. The Mocs captured a 7-0 win on Jan. 31, 2025 in the last gathering between the two in-state foes. The result snapped a Golden Eagle five-match winning streak in the set.
