EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The Tennessee Tech tennis team kicked off Horizon League play in sharp fashion as the Golden Eagles rolled to a 6-1 victory at Southern Indiana in Tuesday's conference opener.
Tech's triumph was the club's third win in a row. The Golden Eagles (7-6, 1-0 HL) are now 7-2 in their last nine matches.
Tuesday's battle of the birds saw Tech secure the doubles point with wins in all three clashes before the Golden Eagles soared in singles play with victories in five-of-six matchups.
"I couldn't be happier with how we played today," TTU head coach Mark Klysner said. "We may have played some of our best doubles of the year, which certainly gave us a huge boost going into singles. Our guys across the board played some really strong first sets, and after USI showed really good fight on every court in the second sets, I think a lot of credit goes to our team for stepping up and closing it out. Now we will prepare for Memphis and a big one on Sunday at home against TSU."
Alex Alvarez and Davids Spaks help set the tone at the top of doubles, behind a 6-3 victory over Jy Hibbert and Aaron Dawson in the No. 1 position. Oliver Dao and Linus Rohlin found success in the No. 2 meeting, thanks to a 6-2 triumph against Axel Sabourin and Kalani Hibbert, while the No. 3 gathering also swung Tech's way with a Murilo Burckhardt and Diego Munoz 6-4 nod over Mathys Bove and Adam Koon.
Tech carried its momentum into singles play, capturing five solo battles over the Screaming Eagles (4-9, 0-1 OVC). Oliver Dao was one of four straight-set wins for the purple and gold after the red-shirt sophomore out of Bratislava, Slovakia took home a 6-3, 6-2 victory against Axel Sabourin in the top get-together.
Murilo Burckhardt went on to pick up a 6-3, 6-3, decision over Adam Koon in the No. 5 spot before Ricard Garavi Yepez triumph against Kalani Hibbert in No. 6 to officially clinch the match for the Golden Eagles.
Diego Munoz added to the Tech margin with a 6-0, 6-4 nod against Jy Hibbert in the No. 4 clash, while Alex Alvarez topped Aaron Dawson, 6-3, 5-7, 10-8, in the No. 2 battle to round out the purple and gold's scoring.
Mathys Dove was responsible for USI's lone point with a 3-6, 6-4, 10-6 win over Davids Spaks in the No. 3 affair.
The Golden Eagles will jump back out of non-conference play with a Friday, Mar. 27 meeting at Memphis. First serve is scheduled for 10 a.m. CT.
