COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee Tech tennis team stayed perfect in Horizon League play as the Golden Eagles bested Belmont, 5-2, in a pivotal conference contest, Friday afternoon at Tech Tennis Courts.
The Golden Eagles (10-7, 3-0 HL) have now won six of the last seven matches. The victory over the Bruins also snapped a six-match slide over Belmont with Tech's last win against their in-state counterpart coming back in 2022.
Tech claimed the doubles point over the Bruins (7-10, 1-2) before the Golden Eagles went on to seize four-of-six singles matchups to get to the finish line.
"What a battle that was today," Tech head coach Mark Klysner said. "It was exactly what I expected going in. Once again, we stepped it up in doubles and took that opening point. Singles was an absolute grind on every court, and what an effort by the guys today. We played with such tenacity and focus and just wanted it so much. Every guy fought their tails off today and now we have a quick turnaround before playing again tomorrow."
The Golden Eagles took the early lead in the match after capturing both completed tandem tangles. The Tech duo of Davids Spaks and Alex Alvarez earned a 6-2 win over Sabi Roi and Esteban Ortiz in court No. 1, while Oliver Dao and Christian Capuccini tallied a narrow 7-5 nod against Charlie Robin and Will Ecklund in the No. 2 position to take home the point.
The No. 3 clash featuring Diego Munoz and Murilo Burckhardt against Eli Mizerski and Morgan Woodson did not finish with the score knotted at 6-6.
Three of Tech's singles triumphs were in straight sets. Alex Alvarez picked up a 6-4, 6-2 victory against Charlie Robin in the No. 2 spot, while Davids Spaks notched a 6-4, 6-2 decision over Morgan Woodson in the No. 3 gathering and Ricard Garavi Yepez collected a 6-3, 6-3 win against Bautista Durrels Rojo in the No. 6 meeting. Garavi Yepez has now won seven consecutive singles matchups.
Murilo Burckhardt picked up a hard-fought, three-set nod over Eli Mizerski in the No. 5 slot to round out the purple and gold's solo success.
Belmont's two points came courtesy of a Sabi Roi 6-4, 7-5 victory against Oliver Dao in the No. 1 and a Wiill Ecklund 6-4, 7-6 decision over Diego Munoz on court No. 4.
The Golden Eagles will have a quick turnaround with another crucial conference contest on Saturday as Tech will take on Tennessee State at 2 p.m. in Nashville.
