COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – The end of the regular season has arrived for the Tennessee Tech tennis team as the Golden Eagles will battle Belmont in Nashville in the final match before the beginning of the Horizon League Men's Championships. Due to the threat of inclement weather, first serve in Music City has been pushed up to 11:30 a.m. CT.
A look at Tennessee Tech
Having already secured the Horizon League's South Division and a top seed in the postseason tournament, the Golden Eagles are in search of sealing the deal on a perfect conference campaign. Tech enters the regular-season finale with a 5-0 Horizon League ledger. Overall, the Golden Eagles have won six straight and nine of the last 10.
Tech (13-7) heads to Nashville after clinching the South Division outright in the club's last contest behind a 6-1 victory over Southern Indiana in the purple and gold's last home match of the year. The Golden Eagles claimed a hard-earned doubles point before Oliver Dao, Alex Alvarez, Diego Munoz, Murilo Burckhardt and Ricard Garavi Yepez all notched singles points in the win.
Alvarez and Burckhardt sit atop the Tech leaderboard in solo victories thanks to 10 apiece. Munoz and Garavi Yepez each have nine singles nods, while Davids Spaks has picked up eight winning decisions.
As far as doubles play is concerned, the duos Spaks and Alvarez, along with Munoz and Burckhardt, are each responsible for 10 tandem triumphs each.
A look at Belmont
Having already locked down a spot in the Horizon League Championships, the Bruins (9-10, 3-2 HL) will be playing for seeding in Saturday's showdown with Tech. A Belmont win would clinch them the South No. 2 seed, while a loss would push the squad to the South No. 3 seed.
Following a 5-2 loss to the Golden Eagles in Cookeville on Apr. 3, the Bruins have captured back-to-back battles behind a 4-2 win at Southern Indiana on Apr. 4 and a 4-3 victory over TSU on Apr. 10.
Sabi Roi leads the team with nine singles wins this spring. The senior from Lyon, France has posted a 5-6 record out of the No. 1 position, a 1-2 mark in No. 2 and a 3-2 account in No. 3.
The combination of Will Ecklund and Charlie Robin have teamed up to form Belmont's most formidable doubles duo. The pair has posted a 10-4 record this season, doing all of their damage out of the No. 2 slot in the lineup.
Inside the series
After topping the Bruins in Cookeville on Apr. 3, Tech now owns a 20-18 advantage in the all-time series. The Golden Eagle victory snapped a string of six consecutive Belmont wins.
