COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee Tech tennis team will hit the courts in Cookeville for their final non-conference home match of the spring as the Golden Eagles are set to host Cumberland on Tuesday. First serve is slated for 2 p.m. CT and admission to Tech Tennis Courts is free of charge.
A look at Tennessee Tech
Tech's tangle with the Phoenix is a makeup match from an originally scheduled Mar. 8 affair that was postponed due to inclement weather conditions. The Golden Eagles (8-7, 2-0 Horizon League) now host Cumberland on the heels of having won four of the last five and eight of the last 11.
Tech is fresh off a 5-2 victory over Tennessee State on Sunday in a match that moved the purple and gold to a 2-0 conference record. After dropping the doubles point to the Tigers, the Golden Eagles rattled off five singles victories as Alex Alvarez, Davids Spaks, Diego Munoz, Murilo Burckhardt and Ricard Garavi Yepez all collected solo triumphs in the pivotal league contest.
Alvarez leads the club with seven singles nods this spring. The junior from Barcelona, Spain has done all of his damage out of the No. 2 spot in the lineup. Spaks, Burkhardt and Munoz have each posted six solo wins, while Garavi Yepez currently has the longest singles winning streak thanks to victories in five straight affairs.
As far as doubles play is concerned, the Tech tandems of Alvarez and Spaks as well as Burckhardt and Munoz each have a team-leading seven wins.
A look at Cumberland
Like Tech, the Phoenix (6-9, 3-3 Mid-South Conference) come to Cookeville following a 5-2 win on Sunday as well after Cumberland took down Georgetown College in a conference clash in Lebanon. The club claimed the doubles point before Matheus Guarnieri, Arthur Fernandes, Mohamed Bouhlel and Mateus Mori all picked up singles wins to help lead Cumberland to the triumph.
Fernandes leads the squad with an 11-4 singles record this spring. Mori and Bouhlel each have 10 solo victories.
Fernandes and Arne Sohmer have teamed up to form Cumberland's most formidable doubles duo behind a 10-2 tandem record this year. The pair has posted a perfect 8-0 mark out of the No. 2 position.
Inside the series
The Golden Eagles have claimed all eight previous matchups in a series that dates back to 1949. The last gathering was a 7-0 Tech triumph on Mar. 25, 1996 in Cookeville.
