COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – After a strong fall and a stellar start to the spring, the Tennessee Tech tennis tandem of Alex Alvarez and Davids Spaks are now nationally ranked with the release of Tuesday's official Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings. The Golden Eagle duo came in as the No. 48 doubles team in the country.
"I couldn't be happier to wake up and find out one or more than one of your players are ranked among the best in the country," first-year Tech head coach Mark Klysner said. "This whole team works their tails off and Alex and Davids have been exceptional since we paired them together in the fall. I think their success contributes to them making each other better on the court and raises each other's level significantly. Congrats to these two fine young men and the best is yet to come."
Alvarez and Spaks are the only Horizon League duo nationally ranked and the pair is one of only 10 non-Power 4 teams to crack the Top 50.
The Tech tandem is coming off an impressive showing in the club's last tangle with a victory over the then 12th ranked doubles duo in the country. In a match at Alabama on Jan. 18, Alvarez and Spaks knocked off Andri Zimnokh and Jacob Olar behind a 6-3 decision in the No. 1 doubles clash.
Alvarez, Spaks and the rest of the Golden Eagles are gearing up for a busy weekend down in Atlanta with matches at Georgia Tech on Friday and Georgia State on Saturday.
