NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee Tech tennis team continued its winning ways as the Golden Eagles picked up a hard-fought, 4-3 victory at Tennessee State to stay perfect in Horizon League play.
With the win, Tech claims at least a share of the Horizon League South Division. The Golden Eagles (11-7, 4-0 HL) have now captured four matches in a row as well as seven of the last eight.
The Golden Eagles soared during doubles play with a pair of lopsided wins before Tech split singles action to pick up the pivotal conference triumph.
"That was another gutty performance by the guys," Golden Eagle head coach Mark Klysner said. "I know they are somewhat feeling the effects of the season at this point, but we just keep grinding away. Doubles was such a huge win for us again. We continue to set the tone there. Playing doubles outside and then having to move indoors for singles was definitely tough as TSU was more used to the courts, but credit to our guys for taking a little time and playing some long points to get used to it themselves. The boys stepped up on a day that they were still feeling the effects of yesterday's match."
Tech won both completed doubles clashes behind an Oliver Dao and Christian Capuccini 6-0 decision over Nicholas Adamec and Tatenda Mutetwa in the No. 2 position as well as a Diego Munoz and Murilo Burckhardt 6-1 victory against Alexander Adamec and James Adler Germinal in No. 3.
The No. 1 tandem tussle between Davids Spaks and Alex Alvarez against Taj Hibbert and Mete Koseoglu did not finish with Hibbert and Koseoglu leading, 3-2.
The Golden Eagles found success over the Tigers in the middle of the singles lineup, thanks to victories in slots No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4.
Alex Alvarez picked up a 6-4, 6-2 win over Mete Koseoglu in the No. 2 meeting, while Davids Spaks collected a 7-5, 6-4 nod against James Adler Germinal in the No. 3 tangle and Diego Munoz earned a 7-5, 6-3 over Nicholas Adamec in the No. 4 battle.
The Tigers (3-12, 2-2 HL) notched a win in No 1 as Taj Hibbert topped Oliver Dao with a 6-2 decision. Tennessee State also tallied points in No. 5 and No. 6 as Alexander Adamec tabbed a 6-4, 5-7, 10-6 victory over Murilo Burckhardt in the No. 5 gathering and Christopher Bogelin seized a 6-2, 6-4 nod against Ricard Garavi Yepez in the No. 6 spot.
Tech will now turn its attention to its final non-conference match of the regular season as the Golden Eagles will travel to Austin Peay on Wednesday, Apr. 8. First serve in Clarksville is slated for 1 p.m. CT.
