CAPE GIARDEAU, Mo. – As the Tennessee Tech softball team's regular-season slate came to a close on Saturday with a 2-0 loss at Southeast Missouri, the Golden Eagles will now shift its focus on a brand new start as the Ohio Valley Conference begins its softball tournament on Wednesday.
With the loss, coupled with a 6-1 Southern Indiana win over UT Martin, the Golden Eagles and the Screaming Eagles tied for sixth place in the overall standings. USI earned the tiebreaker by beating Tech twice in three meetings in Cookeville this season, putting the Golden Eagles as the No. 7 seed.
Tech will open the conference tournament on Wednesday morning at 10 AM against the Screaming Eagles – the third straight season that the two teams have met in an elimination contest. The winner will advance to a game later Wednesday afternoon against No. 3 SIUE, while the loser will see its season come to a close in the single-elimination round.
The Golden Eagles managed to get nine on base, but just couldn't get them home. Sofia Carroll, Ashley Capelouto, Makayli Harris, Ella Wampler and Ella Grace Harvey each collected hits, while Carroll was walked twice and Capelouto once.
Wampler had a strong outing in the circle, allowing two runs on five hits, walking one and striking out one in five innings of work. Hannah Lange closed out the contest with one hit allowed in one frame.
Elliott Stinson picked up the victory as she went 4 2/3 scoreless innings, yielding three hits and a walk while striking out four. Willow Van Haren threw the final 2 1/3 frames, allowing two hits with two walks and three strikeouts to earn the save.
Both runs came in the fourth inning as Raigan Brannon and Gracie Luna hit solo home runs on two of the Redhawks' six total hits.
