COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – All the scoring came early, but it turned out to be one heck of a pitchers' duel on Sunday as the Tennessee Tech softball team battled with Southern Indiana, but it proved to be a 2-1 victory for the Screaming Eagles in the finale to take the series two games to one.
The Golden Eagles (14-24, 11-7 Ohio Valley Conference) return to action Tuesday as they host Bellarmine in a midweek contest.
Faith Rush and Mia Kiegel had solid starts for both teams with Rush going the first three innings, allowing two runs – one earned -- on two hits, walking three and striking out one. Kiegel, who earned the win for USI, threw the first four frames, allowing one run on five hits, walking one and striking out four.
Anna Kemp threw the next 2 2/3 innings for the visitors, allowing one hit and two walks with a strikeout, while Kylie Witthaus picked up the save, coming in with two down in the bottom of the seventh and retiring her lone batter faced.
Ella Wampler closed out the game for the Golden Eagles, keeping the Screaming Eagles scoreless for four innings, yielding four hits and striking out two.
Ashley Capelouto and Abbee Klinefelter both picked up two of Tech's six total hits in the game, while USI had six different players collect hits.
Tech took the lead first as Capelouto led off with a single down the left field line, then Klinefelter put down a bunt single, beating out the throw. A Harris grounder moved Klinefelter up, then Rush came up to the plate. She struck out, but the USI catcher lost the ball briefly. No throw was made as Rush took first base, loading the bags.
Bishop hit the ball to second base and the USI defense attempted to go for Capelouto at the plate, but the throw was not in time, putting Tech up 1-0.
Both of Southern Indiana's runs came in the third inning as Caroline Stapleton singled hom Kate Satkoski, while a throwing error allowed Stapleton to advance. Stapleton came home on Sydney Long's single to center field.
Makayli Harris and Klinefelter had two big defensive plays as they turned a single into an out with Grace Huffman's ball hit to right. Harris picked up and fired to first to a waiting Klinefelter for the out. Harris later doubled up Long and Katelyn Marx with a flyout to right, then a throw back to first to retire the retreating baserunner.
