CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – After spending last weekend in Clarksville for the APSU Classic, the Tennessee Tech beach volleyball team will return to Clarksville this week for the APSU Invitational on the penultimate week of the regular season.
Tech will take on Eastern Illinois at 10 AM Friday morning, then Missouri State at 2 PM. The event continues Saturday as the Golden Eagles face Southwest Baptist at 2 PM, then close the event out with host Austin Peay at 4 PM.
The Golden Eagles (3-20) will close out the regular season next week with the Ohio Valley Conference Play Day weekend at Morehead State before heading to Martin the following week for the conference tournament.
In Tech's previous battle with Eastern Illinois on March 28 at Chattanooga, the Golden Eagles dropped a 5-0 decision in a hotly contested affair with two pairings going to three sets and close scores across the board, making it a lot closer than the final score indicates.
EIU comes into the weekend with a 2-8 record, playing just one match since squaring off with the Golden Eagles in Chattanooga as the Panthers fell 4-1 to Lindenwood. The Panthers' lone conference victory is against Tech and its only other victory on the season was a 5-0 win over McKendree at the Missouri State tournament.
Friday's meeting against the Panthers will not count in the conference standings as the Golden Eagles will face EIU again in the conference event next week in Morehead.
Missouri State has had an excellent campaign so far, posting a 17-3 overall mark and a 3-0 record in Conference USA play. The Bears are coming off of a 2-2 weekend at the Battle of the Bay Tournament in St. Petersburg, Fla., claiming 4-1 wins over Saint Leo and Eckerd, while falling 3-2 to Eckerd and Tampa. MSU bounced back with a 5-0 victory over Southwest Baptist this past Saturday.
The Bears have a 3-0 record against OVC competition this season, beating Lindenwood 4-1 and Eastern Illinois 5-0 at the Missouri State Tournament Feb. 20 and 21, then beat Lindenwood the following week 5-0 at the Beach Bear Bash. One of Missouri State's three losses was to nationally-ranked Arizona, who won 4-1.
Southwest Baptist has a 4-14 record on the season, scattering Division I competition across its slate with its victories coming against non-D-1s Oklahoma Wesleyan, Ottawa (Kan.) and Concordia (Texas).
SBU went 1-3 at the Mary Hardin-Baylor tournament, picking up its lone win over Concordia, then falling 5-0 to UMHB and Texas A&M-Texarkana.
Tech played Austin Peay last week as the Governors improved to 11-16 with a shortened 3-0 victory over the Golden Eagles. It was the last action for both teams before this weekend's event.
