Comeback bid falls short as Tech women fall at SIUE
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Tennessee Tech went on a 13-2 run to get back within reach of SIUE on Saturday afternoon, but the furious comeback was stopped just short as the host Cougars claimed a 67-62 victory. Tech falls to 10-9, 3-7 in the Ohio Valley Conference. The Golden Eagles return to action on Tuesday at Tennessee State, weather permitting. Reagan Hurst led Tech in scoring with 17 points as she was 4-for-8 from the field with two 3-pointers and a 7-for-7 effort at the line. Chloe Larry had 16 points, while LaReesha Cawthorn narrowly missed a double-double with 10 points and eight rebounds to go with five steals and a block. Cam Mathews and Reghan Grimes each had nine points. Lauren Miller led SIUE (10-10, 3-7 OVC) with 16 points on 6-of-12 shooting, while Syanne Mohamed was 6-for-8 from the field and 3-for-4 at the line to collect a double-double with 15 points and 15 boards. Kiyoko Proctor had 13 points and Macy Silvey had 11 on 4-for-8 shooting with a trio of 3-pointers. SIUE won the first quarter, outscoring Tech 15-9. The margin didn’t change at the intermission as both teams scored 17 points. The Cougars extended their lead by three with an 18-15 third quarter. SIUE’s largest lead of the game came in the third as it led by 12 midway through the period. With Tech’s 13-2 outburst in the fourth, Mathews brought the Golden Eagles back within one with 3:05 remaining in the contest. After SIUE surged back out by seven with 48 seconds left, Larry hit a 3-pointer and Grimes a layup – sandwiching a made free throw to get back within three at 62-59 with 31 seconds left. Miller connected on a pair of free throws, but Mathews hit a clutch 3-pointer at 25 seconds remaining to make it 64-62. However, Miller and Mohamed hit free throws to secure the final margin. Tech was able to force 16 SIUE turnovers to convert into 26 points and create 14 second-chance points. The Golden Eagles finished the game shooting 22-for-63 – 34.9 percent – from the field, hitting -for-18 from long range (44.4 percent) and 10-for-12 at the line (83.3 percent).
