Tech women head to Georgia to take on Kennesaw State

KENNESAW, Ga. – Tennessee Tech picked up a big victory on Tuesday against in-state rival Middle Tennessee, but the time for revelry is over as the Golden Eagles go back to work, heading toward Atlanta to take on Kennesaw State.
Tipoff for the game is at 1 PM Central. The game will be streamed on ESPN+ (subscription required).
This is only the second time in program history the two teams have squared off against each other. You have to go back to the 1989-90 season to find the previous meeting with Tech winning 89-65.
Cecilia Ramsey had an unconventional double-double with 18 points and 10 assists, while Angela Moorehead had 16 points and 11 rebounds. Melinda Clayton posted 16 points, nine rebounds and three blocks, with Arnetta Peterson chipping in with 10. Shawn Monday had 11 assists in the victory.
Thirty-six years later and the two teams meet once more.
Kennesaw State enters the contest with a 2-1 record, besting Shorter College 85-36, falling to Florida Atlantic 69-68 and beating ETSU 64-63 in a pair of one-point nailbiters. Destyne Jackson drained a 3-pointer with six seconds remaining to put Florida Atlantic on top with a last-second try by Trynce Taylor missing.
Keyarah Berry hit the front end of a pair of free throws with 11 seconds remaining to take a 64-62 lead over ETSU. The Bucs responded as Anala Nelson was put to the line. She hit the first, then missed the second with Sabreya Monsanto collecting the ricochet. Monsanto attempted a layup in the paint, but the shot failed with Berry retrieving the rebound and running out the clock.
The Tech women will face ETSU at the Eblen Center on Thursday.
As a team, Kennesaw State is scoring an average of 72.3 points, while allowing 56.0. The team is shooting .491 from the floor, .419 from 3-point range with an average of 4.3 per game, and .606 from the free-throw line with an average of 13.3 per game.
Berry leads the team in scoring as the only player averaging double figures at a 17.3 ppg clip. Kailyn Fields and Latzaia Williamson are both averaging 9.7 points, while Shania Nichols is at 9.0 per game.
On the glass, Taylor is averaging 8.3 rebounds, with TaTianna Stovall backing her up at a 6.0-board rate. Fields and Kaelyn Flowers each share the team lead in assists with nine, while Berry leads the Owls with nine steals.
For the Golden Eagles, they overcame a slow start against Middle Tennessee this past Tuesday and showed a lot of potential for the young season in the 63-54 victory. True freshman LaReesha Cawthorn was a perfect 7-for-7 in the second half, finishing 9-for-11 from the field with 21 points and eight rebounds, while Reghan Grimes and Chloe Larry each finished with 14 points.
Tech opened the season on Nov. 3 with a 92-67 victory over the University of the Cumberlands, then topped Jackson State last Friday 59-53.
Grimes leads the team with a 17.3-point average, while Larry is at 12.7 ppg, and Reagan Hurst and Cawthorn both at identical 10.3-point averages. Cawthorn is presently averaging a double-double with a 10.0 rebound per game clip, while Grimes is averaging 5.3.
Hurst and Tulsa transfer Cam Mathews lead the team in assists with 10 each, while Cawthorn and Grimes have a team-best five steals and Cawthorn a team-best six blocks.
As a team, Tech is averaging 71.3 points per game, while allowing 58.0 a game. The Golden Eagles are shooting .435 from the field, .361 from 3-point range with an average 7.3 treys made, and .687 from the stripe with an average of 15.3 made.
