MACOMB, Ill. – Tennessee Tech put up a fight Saturday at Western Illinois, but the high-powered offense of the host Leathernecks proved tough to handle as WIU claimed a 77-60 victory at Western Hall.
Now, the Golden Eagles (10-5, 3-3 Ohio Valley Conference) return home with Southern Indiana looming on the horizon.
Tech got off 60 shots – 12 more than the Leathernecks – but the trouble was they just didn't fall, knocking down 19 for a 31.7 percent clip. The Golden Eagles were able to sink 11 3-pointers, with Chloe Larry accounting for four of those, followed by three for Reghan Grimes.
Western Illinois (13-2, 5-1 OVC) shot 58.3 percent from the field, primarily on the inside as the Leathernecks had 48 points in the paint with just a trio of 3-pointers. As expected, Mia Nicastro put up big points, collecting 25 on a 9-for-14 day with a 3-pointer and going 6-for-6 from the charity stripe.
Mallory Shetley had 14 points, while Addi Brownfield had 11 and Allie Meadows 10.
The Leathernecks were 18-for-20 at the line as Tech was whistled for 20 fouls, while the Golden Eagles were 11-for-15 at the stripe.
With Tech leading 7-6, WIU put together an 11-0 run to make it 17-7 in the first quarter and never looked back, outscoring the Golden Eagles 21-14 in the opening period, then outscoring Tech 22-13 in the second to make it a 43-27 halftime lead.
The Golden Eagles were able to chip their deficit down, outscoring Western 18-11 in the third to get back within nine with 1:02 left in the quarter. However, the Leathernecks outscored Tech 23-15 in the final period to seal the contest.
Larry led the Golden Eagles in scoring with 16 points, while Grimes added 13. Lyriq Mastin and Cam Mathews each added 10 points, LaReesha Cawthorn had eight rebounds, while Reagan Hurst had four assists.
