MANHATTAN, Kan. -- For Tennessee Tech football fans who are
making the journey to Manhattan, Kan., Saturday to see the Golden
Eagles tackle Big 12 foe Kansas State, there will be plenty of
activities surrounding the game to keep your attention.
Bill Snyder Family Stadium will be booming with activity when
Kansas State hosts Tech in the Wildcats' final non-conference
contest of the season. The afternoon marks the annual celebration
of Fort Riley Day and Band Day at the stadium, which will also
coincide with University Family Day at K-State.
Another great crowd is expected and fans are encouraged to be in
their seats early on Saturday as festivities surrounding Fort Riley
Day will begin at approximately 12:40 p.m., in the stadium. The
pregame show will feature a Color Guard unit that will include all
Fort Riley unit colors, a moment of silence to honor those who have
given the ultimate sacrifice in support of Operation Iraqi
Freedom/Operation Enduring Freedom, and a helicopter flyover at the
conclusion of the National Anthem.
But fans should get the biggest bang out of the show when the
Wildcats are welcomed to the field thunderously to the firing of
"Old Thunder," a Civil War-era cannon set in the northeast corner
of the north end zone, and machine gun fire from two High Mobility
Mounted Wheeled Vehicles stationed near the home team ramp in the
north end zone. During halftime, participants in Fort Riley Day and
Band Day will join forces for the 1812 Overture, which will include
the firing of four 105 mm Howitzer cannons. The cannons will be
located on the grassy area outside the east stands in the northeast
corner of the stadium.
In addition, Fort Riley will display an HMMWV and an Armored
Security Vehicle on the west Bramlage sidewalk, while an expected
1,400 soldiers are treated to a tailgate barbeque.
