Schmissrauter throws perfect game, Tech run-rules a pair
GALLATIN, Tenn. - Sophomore Maddie Schmissrauter pitched the
third perfect game in Tennessee Tech softball history on Tuesday as
the Golden Eagles swept Volunteer State 11-0 and 10-1.
Schmissrauter (11-10) struck out four in the five inning contest,
allowing only two balls to reach the outfield. The Lady Pioneers
(33-14) were helpless as Schmissrauter became the first Tech
pitcher since 1997 to throw a perfect game. Freshman Whitney
Cummings led the Golden Eagles (26-29, 10-12 OVC) from the plate,
going 3-3 with five RBIs and two runs scored. She was just a triple
shy of the cycle, hitting her 15th double and eighth home run of
the year, a three run shot in the first game.
Sophomore Katie Betry followed up Cummings' double with her first
triple, just the second for the Golden Eagles this year.
Sophomore Kaleigh Gates went 2-3 with a pair of RBIs and a run
scored.
In the second game, freshman Cassidy Skeen went 3-3, scoring twice
and driving in three as Tech took the 11-1 victory. Fellow freshman
Brooke Basten also had an great performance, scoring two runs on
her three hits.
Freshman Holly Thomas (14-15) picked up the win in the circle,
striking out four and allowing just three hits and one run.
The Golden Eagles must now wait to see if they will qualify for
the Ohio Valley Conference tournament next week. Tech is currently
ranked fifth in the conference and must finish in the top six to
qualify. With no more OVC games remaining on the schedule, the
Golden Eagles must rely on losses by Tennessee State and Eastern
Illinois to maintain their ranking.
