Gamecocks complete sweep of Golden Eagles
JACKSONVILLE, Ala. - The Tennessee Tech softball team evened its
Ohio Valley Conference record on Sunday, losing to Jacksonville
State 4-0.
The Golden Eagles (23-26, 9-9 OVC) have now lost five straight
conference games, but remain in fourth place, one game ahead of
Eastern Kentucky. Freshman pitcher Holly Thomas (12-13) was unable
to strike out a single Gamecock batter, allowing four runs on four
hits and four walks.
Tech's only two hits of the first five innings came in the third
when sophomores Taylor Horseman and Lacie Coquerille got
back-to-back singles with one out. JSU pitcher Karla Pittman
(11-1), however, was able to strike out the next two batters,
stranding both runners.
An error by sophomore Katie Betry to open the fourth allowed a
Gamecock runner to reach and eventually score to put JSU ahead
1-0.
In the sixth, State (30-9,14-1 OVC) added three runs, getting just
one hit in the inning, a double by Allison Svoboda..
Sophomore Kaleigh Gates and freshman Brooke Basten each had singles
in the seventh, but were left on base as Thomas and Horseman struck
out to end the game.
Pittman struck out six and walked one, giving up five hits in the
contest.
Coquerille went 2-5 with a pair of singles as Tech left six runners
on base.
The Golden Eagles will travel to Tennessee State on Thursday for a
4 p.m. game before heading to the west side of the state to face
UT-Martin in a three-game series next weekend.
