Cummings, Schmissrauter lead Tech to 3-1 win over Chattanooga
Cummings, Thomas named all-tournament
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- Whitney Cummings blasted a two-run home run,
Holly Thomas hit a solo shot and Maddie Schmissrauter tossed a
complete game as the Tennessee Tech softball team wrapped up play
at the Chattanooga Challenge Sunday with a 3-1 victory over the
host Mocs, the third straight win for coach Tory Acheson's Golden
Eagles (3-2).
Cummings and Thomas were named to the all-tournament team.
Schmissrauter (2-1) worked seven innings without allowing an earned
run, stranding seven UTC runners on base. She scattered eight hits,
walked one and struck out seven Moc batters.
UTC pitcher Kandice Irwin (2-1) took the loss, working seven
innings and allowing four hits and three runs. She struck out six
and didn't walk anybody.
The Tech offense came from the long ball. After three scoreless
innings, Tech struck with a two-run blast from Cummings, a shot to
right centerfield, scoring Lacie Coquerille who opened the inning
by drawing a walk.
Tech got its third run in the sixth when Thomas ripped a two-out,
line shot down the left field line.
Chattanooga loaded the bases in the third with two hits and a walk,
but Schmissrauter got a strikeout to end the threat.
The Mocs tried to rally in the bottom of the sixth, but
Schmissrauter got out of a jam allowing one unearned run and
stranding two runners.
The Golden Eagles play in the Kennesaw State Tournament next
weekend. Tech will face Wright State and WIU-Edwardsville on
Friday, then meet the host team Saturday, before advancing to a
playoff round.
