Snowy conditions expected at Eblen Center Monday night against Jacksonville State
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. --- The weather advisory committee has called for a Blizzard Monday night as the Tennessee Tech women's basketball team hosts Jacksonville State with the opening tip set for 7 p.m.
One of the most unique traditions in college basketball, the Blizzard began in 1985 when students brought "Tech Squares" – squares of toilet paper stocked in the dormitory bathrooms – and threw them into the air after the first successful shot made by the Golden Eagles.
The annual tradition is being renewed, and fans can be a part of the Blizzard on Monday.
TTU will look to stay perfect in its brief two-game homestand which included a 60-57 overtime victory against Southeast Missouri last Saturday.
Monday's encounter marks the 17th meeting between TTU and JSU, with the Golden Eagles owning the series edge at 13-3. Tech has won the last six meetings against the Gamecocks, including their last meeting a season ago when TTU secured the OVC regular season championship.
The Golden Eagles, who mounted a six-point comeback in the second half to force overtime against the Redhawks, were lights out during the second half and overtime sessions as they shot 15-of-32 from the field as they stayed perfect at home in OVC play.
Jacksonville State (4-16, 1-6 OVC) is 1-1 in its last two games, which includes 74-73 win over Austin Peay and a 73-57 loss to Murray State. JSU's win against Austin Peay ended a nine-game losing streak.
The Gamecocks have three players averaging more than 10 points a game this season, including Briana Morrow, who leads the team with 11.9 points per game. Danielle Vaughn is averaging 10.3 points and a team-leading 8.7 rebounds per game.
Saturday's doubleheader will be broadcast regionally on WCTE, as well as TTU's game on Monday against Tennessee State. The games will also be streamed on the web at ovcsports.tv.
Tickets for the game can be purchased at the Athletic Ticket Office in Eblen Center, or by calling (931) 372-3940.
