COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – After an exciting win in Chattanooga on Thursday night, the Tennessee Tech women will try to keep the momentum building Sunday as the Golden Eagles take on North Alabama in the Hooper Eblen Center.
Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. Sunday after the originally scheduled start was pushed back due to Tech hosting the Ohio Valley Conference Soccer Championships.
Roger Ealey and Frank Harrell will have the call on 106.1 The Eagle, while Dylan Vazzano and Steve Smith will narrate the action on ESPN+ (subscription required).
The game is also Camper Appreciation Day with free admission to any camper wearing their Tech Women's Basketball camp T-shirt, where there will also be free face painting, balloon art and a poster creation station.
The Golden Eagles enter Sunday's matchup with a 2-0 record after Reghan Grimes nailed a layup off of Chloe Larry's dish with just one second remaining to give Tech the 48-46 victory over Chattanooga. The season-opener this past Monday was also a decisive 82-54 Golden Eagle victory over Emory & Henry.
Through the first two games, Tech is averaging 65 points and 43.0 rebounds, outdoing their opponents' 50.0-point and 28.5-rebound average. The Golden Eagles are shooting .410 from the field, .241 from 3-point range and 27-for-42 at the line. Turnovers are elevated at the moment with 21 on average through the first two games, but Tech is forcing an average of 23.
True freshman Larry is leading the team in scoring average with a 12.5-point mark, while Anna Walker, who recorded a double-double in the win over Chattanooga, is nearly averaging a double-double with 9.5 points and 10.5 rebounds a game. Eastern Illinois transfer Taris Thornton and junior Reghan Grimes are both averaging 11 points a game.
It will not be easy though as North Alabama is already coming into Cookeville with a win over an Ohio Valley Conference opponent as the Lions topped UT Martin 66-63 on Monday. Kenley McCarn cut the Lions' lead to one with 15 seconds remaining on a 3-pointer, but Jazzy Klinge drew a foul and knocked down both free throws with two seconds left for the final margin. The Skyhawks never led in the second half and UNA led by as many as eight points in the fourth quarter before UTM climbed back within reach in the final seconds.
Emma Kate Tittle led the Lions with 21 points, while Charity Gallegos scored 15 and Alyssa Clutter added 10. India Howard led the battle on the glass with nine rebounds. The Lions, however, turned the ball over 29 times in the contest to Martin's 18.
As a team, North Alabama shot 46.9 percent from the field, 44.4 from long-range and 66.7 at the line.
UT Martin had four double-digit scorers in the game, including 16 points from Anaya Brown, 15 for Kenley McCarn, 11 from Daejah Richmond and 10 from Shae Littleford. The Skyhawks scored 25 points off turnovers, while shooting 41.1 percent from the field, 30.0 from 3-point range and 61.1 percent at the free-throw line.
Following Sunday's contest, the Tech women will host Jackson State on Thursday at 7 p.m. before embarking on a four-game road trip to Middle Tennessee, East Tennessee State, Samford and Colorado before returning home for the Education Day contest against the University of the Cumberlands on Dec. 6.
