Despite loss, Golden Eagles fight and show promise for the future to close historic season

COLUMBIA, S.C. – With Tennessee Tech’s 12th appearance in the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament in the rearview, the Golden Eagles close the books on what has been an incredible season. After all, that’s the facet to look at following Friday’s first round game against the top-seeded South Carolina Gamecocks. With a 108-48 loss to the defending national champions, yes, there’s disappointment. When wouldn’t there be as a season comes to a close, especially with an incredible group of people who have gone through so much and lifted each other up to new heights? As Tech head coach Kim Rosamond noted in the post-game press conference, it took the defending national champions to end the Golden Eagles’ impressive 17-game winning streak.

Golden Eagles pull through in fourth to beat USI, advance to 25th OVC title game

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – It’s hard to beat a team three times in the same season, much less twice on their home turf. Southern Indiana might have had the fans at their back, but the top-seeded Tennessee Tech women’s basketball team has been there in hostile environments. Instead, the Golden Eagles stood tall, showing grit and determination. The Tech women – now on their 16th straight victory – are in it to win it and they aren’t stopping now. The Golden Eagles topped Southern Indiana 88-78 on Friday afternoon in the Ford Center in the OVC Basketball Championship semifinals and now advance to their 25th OVC championship game. Tech will play Lindenwood for the title at 3 p.m. Saturday in the Ford Center. The game will be live on 106.1 The Eagle with Dylan Vazzano and Frank Harrell on the call, while Dorian Craft and Lexi Ayala will handle broadcasting duties on ESPN+ (subscription required).

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. — It was a fitting day to celebrate Tennessee Tech’s senior class as the Golden Eagle women used their veterans to great effect, getting a little bit of revenge for an early-season loss at Lindenwood as they beat the Lions 77-59 at the Eblen Center. COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee Tech women’s basketball team is already assured of a share of the Ohio Valley Conference’s regular-season championship.  The thing is… they really don’t want to share. Still remembering a tough night in St. Charles back in December, the Golden Eagles look to close out the regular season with a victory on Saturday as Lindenwood comes into the Eblen Center.

Tech women can clinch share of OVC title Thursday vs. Western Illinois

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Thursday’s game against Western Illinois just became a lot bigger for the Tennessee Tech women’s basketball team. With Lindenwood’s 75-70 loss in Macomb on Tuesday night, the Golden Eagles now have the opportunity to claim at least a share of the Ohio Valley Conference regular-season title with a victory over Western Illinois on Thursday. If Tech takes care of business Thursday and Saturday, the Golden Eagles can claim the OVC regular-season title outright when Lindenwood comes to down for the regular-season finale on Saturday. However, it’s still one game at a time for the Tech women and what matters is the task at hand Thursday night as the Leathernecks come to the Eblen Center.

The streak is also tied for the fifth-longest winning streak in program history.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Reghan Grimes stood behind the arc. She was cool, collected. Just 45 seconds earlier, Little Rock had retaken the lead in a game that was tilting back and forth. The home Trojans then had just missed a jump shot in the paint that could have extended their lead, but Chloe Larry came up with the rebound. As the seconds ticked away down to 27, Grimes took the pass. She set up and it seemed like she had all the time in the world. As she fired, the ball’s arc went perfectly into the net. Tennessee Tech was back on top by two points.

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – It was a milestone evening for the Tennessee Tech women’s basketball team on Thursday night as the Golden Eagles claimed the program’s 500th Ohio Valley Conference victory, topping Southeast Missouri 79-66 in the Hooper Eblen Center. It’s a milestone, especially in the era of conference realignment, that hasn’t been reached by many teams and Tech is the first in the OVC to reach that level. The total only includes the regular-season OVC matchups as the postseason tournaments count only in overall record and not in conference records. The Golden Eagles (11-5 overall, 5-2 OVC) were on fire early on, scoring 28 points on a scorching 12-for-18 (66.7 percent) from the field. The total was the most for Tech in a first quarter this season and the second-most in any quarter, trailing only the 29-point outburst in the third quarter against Western Illinois.

The Golden Eagles will get their chance to do that Tuesday night as they host Lipscomb for the first part of the Purple Palooza exhibition doubleheader at the Hooper Eblen Center. Tipoff is slated for 5:30 p.m. The Purple Palooza event begins at 4:30 p.m. with free trick-or-treating around the Eblen Center concourse with student groups, community groups and businesses and Tech athletic teams handing out candy. Admission to the game is free, but there will also be opportunities for fans to donate to the Cookeville Regional Medical Center Charitable Foundation as the NCAA allows teams to play exhibition contests against Division I opponents before the traditional start of the season as long as it is a charity-based event.
