Track team set to compete at Austin Peay meet Saturday
The Tennessee Tech women's track & field team will be competing Saturday at the Austin Peay Invitational, the first action for the Golden Eagles in a couple of weeks.
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. -- The Tennessee Tech women's track &
field team will be in Clarksville Saturday, returning to action for
the first time in a couple weeks, when it competes in the Austin
Peay Invitational.
The meet gets underway at 10 a.m., with running events schedules
to start at noon. Coach Tony Cox will take a team of 26 women to
the meet, along with three men. The event will be a small
gathering, with teams from Tech, Austin Peay and Lipscomb, along
with a handful of individiuals.
Nearly all of the Golden Eagles expected to compete Saturday got
their first taste of action in the outdoor season at the Vanderbilt
Black & Gold meet two weeks ago. One runner who will be making
her outdoor debut is freshman sprinter Haley Grinder of Cookeville,
who will run the 100m and 200m races.
Among Tech's athletes who could have the biggest impact Saturday
are senior Emily Weinzetl in the 800m, freshman Broolyn Kimball in
the 400m, and junior Madison Borden in the discus. Weinsetl had
Tech's best time at 800m at Vanderbilt, finishing in 2:25.94.
Kimball led Tech in the 400m race with a 1:00.33 showing. Borden,
who had Tech's top throw in the shot put, has shown steady
improvement in the discus after marking a toss of 121 feet, two
inches at Vanderbilt.
Several Golden Eagles established new personal-best marks two weeks ago at the Vanderbilt meet. Among those were Lacy Yslas in the discus, Leah Bradley in both the 800m and 1,500m, Kara Webb and Kendale Caldwell in the 800m, and Jenna Philpott in the 400.
Tech's distance runners also saw PRs fall in the 3,000m event at
Vanderbilt, including Rebecca
Cline, Meghan
O'Donoghue and Brittney
Brown.
