TTU softball hosts three-game homestand against OVC-leading UT Martin
After a dramatic walk-off win on Wednesday against Kennesaw State, the Tennessee Tech softball team will look for its momentum to carry over to this weekend when the Golden Eagles host UT Martin in a three-game homestand at the Tech Softball Field.
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – After a dramatic walk-off win on Wednesday against Kennesaw State, the Tennessee Tech softball team will look for its momentum to carry over to this weekend when the Golden Eagles host UT Martin in a three-game homestand at the Tech Softball Field.
Tech, which has a 15-21 record overall and 4-6 mark in the OVC, is currently tied for seventh place in the conference standings, while UT Martin (27-6, 8-2 OVC) is tied for the OVC lead.
The Skyhawks, coach by TTU Sports Hall of Famer Donley Canary, have been dominant at home and at neutral sites, but UTM has struggled in away contests thus far this season with just a 2-4 mark in away games.
Callie Schmidt was the hero in Tech’s game on Wednesday, and she will enter Saturday’s doubleheader with a team-leading seven home runs and 25 RBIs. Kaleigh Gates leads the Golden Eagles with a .302 batting average and .439 on-base percentage. Melody Christian, the TTU leadoff hitter, is hitting .294 and leads the team with six stolen bases and 23 runs scored.
Tech’s Holly Thomas and Maddie Schmissrauter have combined to start 29 of Tech’s 36 games this season in the circle. Schmissrauter is 6-6 with a 1.94 ERA, while Thomas is 8-10 with a 3.14 ERA.
For UT Martin, Megan Williams leads the team with a .396 batting average and eight home runs. Jenny Bain is hitting .377 with a team-best eight doubles and 30 RBIs. Jordan Garrett leads the team with 28 runs scored and is 10-for-10 in stolen base attempts.
Kate Vanderham and Paij Lintz have been the top two pitchers for UTM this season. Vanderham is 9-1 with an OVC-best 1.76 ERA, while Lintz sports a 12-2 win-loss record with a 2.16 ERA.
The first game of Saturday’s doubleheader begins at 1 p.m., while Sunday’s single game will also begin at 1 p.m. Admission to all regular season home games at the Tech Softball Field is free.
