Tech tops Murray State, heads to APSU for chance at title
MURRAY, Ky. – The Tennessee Tech tennis team continued its winning ways on Friday afternoon, topping host Murray State, 7-0, in Ohio Valley Conference action. The win over Murray sets the Golden Eagles up for a crucial match on Saturday against undefeated Austin Peay, for a chance at a share of the OVC Regular Season title.
MURRAY, Ky. – The Tennessee Tech tennis team continued its winning ways on Friday afternoon, topping host Murray State, 7-0, in Ohio Valley Conference action. The win over Murray sets the Golden Eagles up for a crucial match on Saturday against undefeated Austin Peay, for a chance at a share of the OVC Regular Season title.
The Golden Eagles, 9-12, 7-1 OVC, swept the Racers, winning every match in both the doubles and singles.
In doubles play, junior Alex Arovin and sophomore Alberto Esteban opened things up with an 8-0 win over Will True and Srdjan Trosic. That win moved the pair to 7-0 in OVC play.
The No. 3 doubles finished up next with freshman Jorge Alfonzo and junior Othon Lima taking a win from Aleks Mitric and Anjan Kashyab, 8-3. The No. 2 doubles pairing of junior Alvaro Cintas and senior Artem Tarasov topped David Hess and Max McLean, 8-4.
In singles action, Cintas did quick work, taking down Trosic, 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 3 spot. Freshman Carlos Tajes followed with a 6-3, 6-0, win over Mitric, in the No.5 spot, while Arovin topped True, 6-4, 6-0, in the No. 1 spot.
Lima bested Anjun Kashyab, 6-4, 6-1, in the No. 6 match, while Esteban topped McLean, 6-4, 6-2. In the No.2 spot.
Alfonzo fought diligently against Hess in the No. 4 spot. The freshman took set 1, 6-2, fell in set 2, 2-6, but outlasted his opponent, 11-9, in the tie-breaker, to help the Golden Eagles sweep the day.
The win over Murray State sets the Golden Eagles up for an important showdown with Austin Peay on Saturday, at 11 a.m. in Clarksville, Tenn. Golden Eagles will head in to Clarksville with a three-match winning streak over APSU, dating back to 2012. The biggest match up will come should freshman Eduardo Mena match up with APSU's Aleksas Tverijonas who is 12-5 in the No. 2 spot, 6-0 in OVC play, and on a 10-match win-streak.
