Golden Eagles find succes on first day of Louisville Fall Invitational
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Alejandro Augusto has advanced to the quarterfinals of the Flight "A" singles draw, and joined playing partner Syrym Abdukhalikov in moving on to the next round in the Flight "A" doubles event as the Tennessee Tech tennis team met with success Friday on the first day of the Louisville Fall Invitational.
Augusto defeated Sergiu Muresan of Chicago State in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, in his opening match, then earned a straight set win over Austin Peay's Dimitar Ristovski, 6-2, 6-3. The Golden Eagle sophomore will meet Amaury Derognat of Louisville Saturday for the chance to move into the semifinals.
Also in the Flight "A" singles draw, Abdukhalikov also started with a straight set victory, downing Vlad Catlan of Bluefield State, 7-5 6-2. He was eliminated by Sean Bailey of Austin Peay in a three-set battle, 7-6 (4), 3-6, 7-5.
Ezequiel Gils grabbed a quick 6-, 6-2, win over Morehead State's Kevin Deligny in Flight "B" singles before dropping a 6-3, 6-1, contest to Victor Hoang of Arkansas.
Elsewhere in the Flight "B" singles bracket, Vasily Eremeev was handed a 7-5 6-3 loss by Jeffrey Brown of Louisville. Eremeev fought back in the consolation bracket to claim a 6-3, 6-2 win over John Storie of Austin Peay. He will face Michael Binder of Kentucky Saturday.
In the Flight "A" doubles draw, Augusto and Abdukhalikov cruised to an 8-4 win over Mureson and Mario Noboa of Chicago State. They will meet Mike Nott and Hoang of Arkansas in the quarterfinals on Saturday.
Gils and Eremeev fell out of the Flight "B" doubles draw with an 8-2 loss to Morehead's duo of Deligny and David Clifford. The consolation bracket has Gils and Eremeev meeting Julian Chavez and Rashley Yeremia of Chicago State on Saturday.
