Tech falls by seven to Southern Illinois, 74-67
CARBONDALE, Ill. - With the temperatures in the twenties
overnight, the Tennessee Tech women's basketball team turned up the
heat in the first half taking a 27-26 lead into the locker room,
but the Saluki's came out and used two players to score more than
20 points to steal a 74-67 win.
Tech (3-7, 1-0 OVC) returns to the court after taking a week off
for the holidays when they host former OVC rival Middle Tennessee
at 2 p.m. on Dec. 28.
Holding the advantage in rebounds (33-to-24), the Golden Eagles
grabbed 13 offense boards to nine for Southern Illinois.
"I told the team that whoever had more rebounds would win the
game," said coach Amy Brown. "And that did not happen. But getting
in there and giving us a chance at second points is what we will
need come OVC play."
Both halves saw the score go back and forth with eight different
ties and 10 lead changes with the Golden Eagles biggest lead by
three at 6:43 in the first half. A jumper from junior Meagan Lyons
with :32 left in the first half gave Tech the one point lead.
But both teams came out shooting hot in the second half with both
teams almost scoring what they had in the entire first half within
the first 10 minutes of the second.
Basket for basket is what the fans got a treat of with the score
tied at 49-49 with 8:24 left in the game. A jumper by Adrianne
Griffith just 14 seconds later game the Salukis the lead that they
would not give up the rest of the game, extending the lead to as
much as 10 at the 5:09 mark.
Tech would cut the lead to just two with under three minutes to
play but the Salukis held on for the seven point win 74-67.
Lyons recorded her second straight double-double with 10 points and
10 rebounds. She was one of four different Golden Eagles to score
in double figures. Sophomore Jasmine White led Tech with 14 points
while seniors Blair Bowens and Alison Price totaled 13 and 12
points respectively.
