Softball team takes final swing in non-conference action in Georgia
OVC play is just around the corner and Tennessee Tech has been traveling the southeast preparing for a promising season for first-year head coach Bonnie Bynum. The Golden Eagles will play one final non-league game Wednesday at Thomas University before the OVC slate opens Saturday.

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. -- Ohio Valley Conference play is just around the corner and Tennessee Tech has been traveling the southeast preparing for what looks to be a promising season for first-year head coach Bonnie Bynum. The Golden Eagles will play one final non-conference game Wednesday at Thomas University, with first pitch set for 2 p.m. CDT.
The Golden Eagles turned in another winning performance at the USF Under Armour Showcase over the weekend, finishing 3-2 and improving to 10-9 this season. Tech defeated Maine, Long Island-Brooklyn and Providence in the three-day outing, as the underclassmen stole the show, playing like veterans on the dirt.
Sophomores Angi Sakamoto and Hannah Eldridge combined for over a fourth of Tech's offense, collecting 12 hits, scoring eight runs and sending in eight Golden Eagles runners. Sakamoto sparked a seven-run streak for the Golden Eagles against Long Island University Brooklyn while Eldridge knocked her first home run of the season following Madison Taylor's blast for back-to-back home runs.
Taylor, Tech's top offensive freshman, is second on the team with a .380 batting average, and a second-best 10 RBI. The Golden Eagles have been seeing quality time from fellow freshman Cortney Fry and newcomer Chelsea Burgess. Fry has a perfect fielding percentage while Burgess has been vital at the plate with a team-high four extra-base hits.
Taylor Ketchum (7-3) continues to give strong performances in the circle, with a 2.59 era. Behind Ketchum, senior Claudia Harke (2-3) has pitched 26.2 innings for the purple and gold, while Hannah Weaver (1-1) notched her first career win as a Golden Eagle over Maine in her first complete game.
