Rain forces early finish to Bearcat Invitational, Tech leaves with unfinished business

CINCINNATI, Ohio – And the weather won. At least in terms of giving the Tennessee Tech men's golf team a welcome back to the golf course after four weeks away from the links.
Rain forced an early conclusion to the Bearcat Invitational Tuesday afternoon, denying the Golden Eagles from a chance to climb up the leaderboard and ultimately settle for a tie for 11th.
Senior Lee Whitehead led the Tech squad on day two of the event hosted by Cincinnati, carding an impressive 71 to lead all those in purple and gold for the tournament. The wiley veteran tied for 13th overall while posting an overall number of 147.
Next among scorers for the Golden Eagles was junior Mitch Thomas, who displayed consistent play throughout the event. Thomas tallied back-to-back rounds of 75 to finish with a 150 and tie for 27th. Fellow junior Bryce Kendrick collected a second-day 79, combining it with his 75 from round one to turn in a scorecard of 154.
Senior Mason Griffin rounded out the scorers for the Golden Eagles, shooting 75-80=155 to help Tech wrap up the event with its own scores of 301-305=606.
"It's never fun when weather plays a factor in the outcome of a tournament," head coach Polk Brown said. "We obviously would have loved the chance to come back in round three and make a move. That said, we need to develop some more consistency from round to round and I think that our next event will afford us that opportunity. I'm happy to finally have some consistent play for guys."
Tech will return to action quickly this time around, heading just north for the Kenny Perry Invitational hosted by Western Kentucky. The 54-hole event will begin Monday, Oct. 13 and conclude on Tuesday.
