Tech vs. Tech: State four-ball championship goes to Maxwell and Korth
Former Tech golfers Lee Maxwell and Wes Korth birdied the final hole to break a tie and capture the Tennessee Four-Ball Championship Sunday in Knoxville, edging current Golden Eagle golfes Bryce Kendrick and Lee Whitehead.
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Tennessee Tech was on the lips of golf fans and media at both ends of the state Sunday, with former and current Golden Eagle players challenging for championships in both Memphis and Knoxville.
While much of the country was riveted to the finish as Scott Stallings bid for the title at the FedEx St. Jude Classic in Memphis, over in the shadow of the Smokies, four Tech players were going head-to-head for the Tennessee Golf Association Four-Ball Championship.
After both TTU pairs battled their way through the brackets to reach Sunday's finals, former Tech golfers Lee Maxwell and Wes Korth squared off in match play against current Golden Eagles Bryce Kendrick and Lee Whitehead at the 43rd Annual Tennessee Four-Ball Championship. Veterans Maxwell and Korth found a way to birdie the final hole, through 541-yard, par 5 18th, to edge their way to victory, one-up.
Kendrick and Whitehead jumped ahead early, winning three of the first six holes at the Holston Hills Country Club to go three-up. Maxwell and Korth struck back quickly, squaring things up with birdies on the first three holes of the back nine. The teams stayed even with pars on the next five holes, setting up the showdown on 18.
Fellow Tech golfer Mitch Thomas also competed in the tournament, but he and his partner Ben Reeves, of UT Martin, were eliminated by the duo of Maxwell and Korth in the quarterfinals on Saturday.
Wrapping up their tournament participation Friday were Bobby Nichols Scramble winners Austin Garrett and Peyton Broyles (67-69—136); current Tennessee Tech golfers Adam Cunningham and Mason Griffin (68-70—138); and Cookeville's Tanner Dowland, playing alongside Mills Hamaguchi (74-68—142).
On Saturday, another current Golden Eagle, Mitchell Thomas and his playing partner Ben Reeves, were also eliminated by Korth and Maxwell.
