Tech women in fifth place after first round at Troy Invitational

Tech plays final round of fall season Tuesday

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Battling cool temperatures and gusty winds, the Tennessee Tech women's golf team managed to finish the first day in fifth place among 15 teams at the Troy University Trojan Invitational at the Arrowhead Country Club.

Senior Madison Denman fired a five-over-par 77 Monday, and is in seventh place among the 70 golfers in the field. Jacksonville State, the defending tourney champion, is in first place with a 303 team total, two shots ahead of host Troy. Nichols State is at 310 in third place, followed by South Alabama (314) in fourth and Tech (315) in fifth.

In addition to JSU and Tech, the tourney also includes Eastern Kentucky from the Ohio Valley Conference and the Lady Colonels are one shot behind Tech in sixth place.

Senior Ashley Spangler is one stroke behind Denman with a 78 Monday, and is tied for 14th place. One shot back of that at 79 is Megan Bradford, tied for 25th place. Carley Rhyne (81) is tied for 31st place and Diana Carson (82) is tied for 36th place.

While Monday's high at the course was 58, the final round Tuesday is expected to be played in even cooler conditions with a high forecast around 42 degrees. It's the final tournament of the fall season for first-year coach Brandy Stout's team, which is coming off a first place finish last week at the Austin Peay tournament.
