Rhyne tied atop leader board, Tech third at Great Smokies
WAYNESVILLE, N.C. -- Sophomore Carley Rhyne is tied for the
individual lead at three-under 69, and Tennessee Tech is in third
place among 22 teams competing in the 10th annual Great Smokies
Invitational women's golf tournament.
Host Western Carolina broke the tournament's three-year old
single-round scoring record by two strokes, carding an opening
round 284 on Monday to grab a seven-stroke lead at the tournament
being played at the par 72, 5,922-yard Waynesville Country
Club.
The second and final round is scheduled for Tuesday morning with a
shotgun start at 9:30 a.m. EDT.
Behind Western Carolina is Samford (291) in second place, with
two-time tournament champion Tennessee Tech in third at 292. Tech
won the team title at this event in 1999 and 2000.
Following Tech is Wofford, one-stroke back at 293 and Elon (297)
rounding out the top five.
Rhyne, a sophomore from Powell, Tenn., is one of three players
stand tied atop the individual leader board after 18 holes. She is
joined by Belmont's Lorie Warren, and Chelsea Harris of Austin
Peay.
Junior Diana Carson is next for Tech, shooting a one-under 71
Monday to place her in a tie for eighth. Seniors Madison Denman and
Ashley Spangler carded identical scores of 76, and are tied for
44th place. Junior Megan Bradford, who earned all-tournament honors
last week at Draper Valley with a strong second round, is tied for
68th place with a 78.
