Tech golf teams in sixth place in combined Charleston tournament

Megan Bradford leads Tech women;
John Fox in fourth place in men's event

CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Tennessee Tech men's and women's golf teams had kind of a rocky start Monday in the first 36 holes of the College of Charleston's Stono Cup competition.

The Tech women are sixth in their division, the men seventh in theirs, and Tennessee Tech is in sixth place in the combined team standings of the tournament which wraps up with the final 18 holes Tuesday.

Host College of Charleston holds the lead in the Combined Scores with an 1,195, with Gardner-Webb (1,212) second, James Madison (1,213) third, Wofford (1,224) fourth, USC Upstate fifth (1,241) and Tech (1,251) sixth.

The tournament, being held at Stono Country Club near Charleston, will award a men's and women's team title, as well as a combined championship.

In the women's competition, the Golden Eagles had mixed performances Monday and find themselves in sixth place.

Megan Bradford was the long Tech player to find consistency between her two rounds, firing a 78 in her first round and an 81 in the second. That places her in a tie for 18th place with a 159.

Madison Denman was the only Golden Eagle to improve her score, following a first round 86 with a 79. Carley Rhyne and Ashley Spangler each opened with an 86 and rebounded with a 79, and all three are tied at 28th place with a 36-hole total of 165. Diana Carson is the fifth member of Tech's lineup, finishing Monday in 33rd place after shooting 78 and 89.

College of Charleston leads the women's standings, shooting 307-297?604 on its home course. Wofford (616) is second followed by James Madison (625), Gardner-Webb (626) and Houston Baptist (632) to round out the top five.

The Tech men's team is in seventh place following Monday's 36 holes, with two Golden Eagles in the individual top 10. Senior John Fox is fourth overall after carding rounds of 71 and 72 for a 143 total. Junior Wesley Korth is in ninth place with a 145, shooting 73 and 72.

USC Upstate got a jump on the field, taking a six-shot lead after 36 holes by shooting 293-287?580. Gardner-Webb (586) is second, followed by Stephen F. Austin (587), James Madison (588). Charleston (591). Belmont (593), Tech (605) and Wofford (608).

In addition to Fox and Korth, Tech's lineup also includes Greyson Painter (155) in 32nd place, Tyler Cassetty (162) in 38th place, and Preston Marshal (167) in 40th place.
