COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Cookeville Mayor Laurin Wheaton read out a long list of accomplishments the Tennessee Tech women’s basketball team achieved during the 2022-23 season with Putnam County Mayor Randy Porter on Monday afternoon, citing details from a joint proclamation from the city and county. COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Overwhelming support from the fans, community and the University welcomed Tennessee Tech to Cookeville’s Midtown Social on Sunday night as the Golden Eagle women’s basketball team waited to see who they would be playing in the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament. Tech didn’t have to wait long as the Golden Eagles were one of the earliest matchups announced on the selection show, picked to compete against Monmouth in one of the First Four contests. From there, it’s Morehead State, SIUE, Tennessee State and UT Martin trying to solidify their official spot with one of the first-round byes still in play. One might think that Saturday’s contest between Tennessee Tech and Eastern Illinois would have no stakes, but far from it. Even though the Golden Eagles and the Panthers know exactly when their tournament run starts next week in Evansville, there’s still a little matter of pride on the line on Saturday when the two teams square off for the regular-season finale.
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Tennessee Tech surged out to a big lead and never looked back on Thursday night as Maaliya Owens and Peyton Carter had big nights to lead the Golden Eagles to a 78-57 victory over Southern Indiana. Tech improved to 18-9 with one game remaining in the regular season, 12-5 in the Ohio Valley Conference. Owens needed just one 3-pointer to tie Dana (Bilyeu) McWilliams for the senior record of 74 set back in 1992-93, but she tied it on her first shot, then broke it on her second 3-pointer of the quarter. She ended the night with six 3-pointers – just a shade short of her nine 3-pointer effort in the previous meeting against the Screaming Eagles – which also puts her seven 3-pointers away of tying Allison Clark and Blair Bowens’ single-season 3-point record at 86 each.

The Golden Eagles could tie Eastern Illinois with two victories and two Panther losses – including to Tech on Saturday – but EIU presently holds a tiebreaker over the Golden Eagles with a win over current league leader Little Rock. The next team back from the Golden Eagles – Southeast Missouri – stands in with an 8-8 record, giving Tech a three-game cushion and meaning that no team behind the Golden Eagles can catch them in the standings. That said, only Lindenwood has been eliminated in the race, meaning Tech’s opponent on Thursday – Southern Indiana -- has something to play for.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Tennessee Tech saw first-hand on Thursday night how difficult Little Rock’s defense was to crack as the Golden Eagles ended their first trip to the Ohio Valley Conference newcomer with a 61-45 defeat at the Stephens Center. Jada Guinn had a nearly perfect game, shooting 8-for-9 from the field and 8-for-9 at the free-throw line to score a career-high 24 points. Maaliya Owens followed up her career night on Thursday with another solid showing with 21 points, including five 3-pointers, while true freshman Reghan Grimes posted a new season-best with 17 points.

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – It was a milestone moment 52-and-a-half seasons in the making. As the final buzzer sounded at SIUE’s First Community Arena on Thursday, the Tennessee Tech women’s basketball team not only took its first win of the Ohio Valley Conference campaign with an 85-70 victory over the host Cougars, it gave the Golden Eagles the 1,000th win in program history. Tech (7-4) became the 21st team in NCAA Division I to reach the millennium mark, joining some pretty elite company.

NEW ORLEANS – Tulane put forward a physical fight in its battle with the Tennessee Tech women on Wednesday in the championship game of the Tulane Holiday Tournament, but the Golden Eagles didn’t back down, trying its hardest to keep up with a strong, physical team out of the American Athletic Conference. However, the Golden Eagles saw the Green Wave pull away in the second half, the tide rising with a 12-point run in the third quarter as Tulane took a 71-49 victory over Tech in the last non-conference contest of the season for the Golden Eagles. Tech (6-4) advanced to the championship of the two-day event by default as VCU had to pull out of the tournament on Monday afternoon.
NEW ORLEANS – It could be a milestone day for Tennessee Tech women’s basketball at the Tulane Holiday Tournament on Tuesday as the Golden Eagles will play for its 1,000th victory in the program’s history. MONROE, La. – The Tennessee Tech women started off the Louisiana road trip in style, opening up the three-game swing with a big victory over ULM, topping the Warhawks 83-59 on Saturday night at Fant-Ewing Coliseum. COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee Tech women’s basketball team scored the same or outscored the homestanding Cincinnati Bearcats in three of the four quarters on Thursday afternoon, but it was the second quarter that proved to be the difference in the contest as the Bearcats topped the Golden Eagles 68-57. The Golden Eagles (1-1) were outscored 21-7 in the second period as Tech’s shots wouldn’t fall, shooting 3-for-16 from the floor in the quarter, including 1-for-6 from beyond-the-arc. While Cincinnati didn’t shoot too much better, the Bearcats knocked down three 3-pointers and hit four of their five shots at the free-throw line. Cincinnati had a 14-0 run during that stretch.

Following the 66-53 victory over Stephens College on Thursday night, they’ll have a road map on what the next couple of weeks will have in store. Tech got double-digit scoring nights from Anna Walker, Jordan Brock and Maaliya Owens as Walker led the way with 15 points, Brock and Owens 14. It's the first time since 2011-12 that the Golden Eagles were picked to win the league outright and the 13th time Tech was the favorite in the poll.
