JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – The hits did not come when Tennessee Tech needed them on Tuesday as Jacksonville State capitalized with a four-run inning in the sixth inning to break a 1-1 tie to take game one 5-1, then two-hit the Golden Eagles in the nightcap for a 2-0 victory.
The Golden Eagles fall to 13-14 overall, 7-6 in the Ohio Valley Conference, while Jacksonville State improved to 8-16, 7-7 in the league.
Tech held a 1-0 lead in the third inning as Jessie Lowery scored on a Nicolle Nysted sacrifice fly to right field. She reached on a walk, then advanced to third on a throwing error on a Haeli Bryson bunt.
The run proved to be all the Golden Eagles were able to get across in the doubleheader as Tech stranded seven in the first game, then three more in the second. Tech had four hits in the opener with Beth McCulley collecting half that total, Lowery and Carmen Betts the other two safeties. Game two saw Bryson and Shelby Penning collect the two base knocks.
Alyssa Arden took the loss in game one, her record evened out at 7-7 on the year. She allowed five runs, four earned, on five hits, as she walked three and struck out one. Her JSU counterpart, Reagan Watkins, got the complete-game victory, allowing one unearned run on four hits as she walked four and struck out nine.
Megan Fortner's solo home run tied the game in the bottom of the fourth, then Karsen Mosley hit a two-run double, then a sacrifice fly and a throwing error allowed two more runs to cross.
In game two, Mosely drove in a run with a single to left field in the bottom of the first, then a fielding error at third allowed her to score in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Bryson took the loss, her record falling to 5-3, as she allowed one earned run on seven hits, walking ont and striking out two. JSU's Nicole Rodriguez (4-3) got the win, allowing just two hits and two walks as she struck out three.
The Golden Eagles return to action on Friday as they host Austin Peay at the Tech Softball Field. The doubleheader on Friday is slated for a 2 p.m. start.
