Golden Eagles notch 5-2 win over Chattanooga for fourth-straight victory
A break in its OVC slate proved to not be an issue for the Tennessee Tech tennis team, as the Golden Eagles captured their fourth-straight win behind a 5-2 nod against Chattanooga Sunday afternoon.

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – A break in its OVC slate proved to not be an issue for the Tennessee Tech tennis team, as the Golden Eagles captured their fourth-straight win behind a 5-2 nod against Chattanooga Sunday afternoon. TTU is now 32-1 in the last 33 matches played at Tech Tennis Courts.
The Golden Eagles (6-10, 3-0 OVC) took care of the doubles point thanks to wins in two of the three tandem battles, before registering singles victories in four-of-six matchups. No. 58 Eduardo Mena kept to his winning ways with his seventh-straight singles nod, a 6-3, 6-3 triumph over Niklas Gerdes in the No. 1 affair.
Riku Kubota showed similar ease en route to his fourth-straight singles win, taking down Cooper Long, 6-1, 6-1, in the No. 6 slot.
The Golden Eagles officially clinched the match behind a Wenceslao Albin hard-fought 7-6, 7-5 win over Simon Bustamante in the No. 2 position, but that didn't stop freshman Gonzalo Garcia from a riveting win of his own out of the No. 4 position. Tangled in a three-set thriller, the Barcelona, Spain native bounced back after an initial 4-6 first-set setback with a 6-2 nod in the second set and a 7-5 victory in the finale. Garcia has now collected four-consecutive singles wins.
Chattanooga (7-12) captured wins in the No. 3 and No. 4 slots, as Pablo Llebeili seized a 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 triumph against Marc Mila in the No. 3 position and Luke Plaisted registered a 4-6, 4-6 victory over Jorge Alfonzo in the No. 4 battle.
The Golden Eagles won the doubles point for the fourth-straight match, using wins in No. 2 and No. 3 matchups to take the 1-0 lead early in the contest. The combination of Riku Kubota and Wenceslao Albin took down Pablo Llebeili and Luke Plaisted, 6-3, in the No. 2 tilt, while Eduardo Mena and Gonzalo Garcia also won 6-3 over Niklas Gerdes and Cooper Long in the No. 3 tangle.
Simon Bustamante and Jacob Marshall powered past Marc Mila and Arthur Justo, 6-4, in the top doubles matchup.
Tech will jump right back into conference action, as the Golden Eagles will travel to Jacksonville State for a Thursday, Mar. 5 match against the Gamecocks. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m. CT.
