Thompson named OVC Newcomer of the Week following massive scoring surge

BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – Tennessee Tech men's basketball guard Brett Thompson was named Ohio Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week Monday afternoon after leading the Golden Eagles in scoring last weekend.
It marked the fifth weekly honor for the Golden Eagle squad this season and first for Thompson in the purple and gold. Rookie guard Grant Strong took home Freshman of the Week accolades twice while forward Jerome Beya earned the Freshman award once. Jaylen Sebree was named OVC Player of the Week as well.
Thompson was electric on offense for Tech during the week, averaging 26.0 points, 1.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 1.5 steals in a pair of league tilts. He shot 50 percent from the floor, 43.8 percent from distance, and finished 9-for-10 from the charity stripe.
In the Golden Eagle victory over Lindenwood, Thompson erupted for a career-high 28 points on 10-for-20 shooting, sinking four makes from downtown and finishing a perfect 4-for-4 from the line. He added a team-high six dimes and a pair of steals to the mix.
The Oakland, Calif. native followed it up with 24 points against UT Martin, hitting 8-of-16 attempts from the floor, 3-of-6 tries from deep, and 5-of-6 free throw offerings. He dished out one helper and racked up another steal in the contest.
The junior is averaging 20.5 points over his last four contests, hitting the 20-point mark three times. He is averaging 3.8 assists and 1.5 steals over the same span.
Tech will wrap up the regular season with a road swing up north, starting with the team's first visit to Southern Indiana on Thursday, Feb. 23 in a 7:30 p.m. match-up. The Golden Eagles will then head to Charleston, Ill. for a Saturday affair with Eastern Illinois at 3:30 p.m.
