Defense wins the day during Spring Game
Defense wins the day during Spring Game

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee Tech defense won the day during Saturday’s spring game, but it certainly wasn’t a one-sided affair in the situational scrimmage as the Golden Eagles did see some offensive highlights as well. “I felt overall our football team got better today,” said Tech head coach Bobby Wilder. “I liked the attention to detail – it’s something that we’ve been working hard on. I feel like we played much faster today. The defense had some moments where they really shined. We had some big plays from the offense today. I felt like both quarterbacks (Dylan Laible and Jordyn Potts) performed very well and I was really pleased to see that good mix of returning offensive skill guys and the guys we brought in in January. They really showed the progress we’re making this spring.”

IRVING, Texas – As the National Football Foundation announced its annual Hampshire Honor Society, the roster included a record 1,989 student-athletes from all levels of college football – NCAA, NAIA and sprint football. Among those honorees, four Tennessee Tech football players – Brad Clark, Kail Dava, Cole Putnam and Trevor Stephens – were inducted as members of the exclusive group.

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Aaron Swafford set it up and Jordyn Potts knocked them down as they helped lead Tennessee Tech to its first shutout since 2013, fourth shutout since 2000 as well as the first shutout in the series against Tennessee State with the 35-0 victory on Saturday in Nissan Stadium. For their efforts, Swafford was named the Big South-Ohio Valley Conference Football Association’s Defensive Player of the Week, while Potts was the league’s Freshman of the Week, as voted on by the combined sports information contacts.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – As the clock hit zero at Nissan Stadium, tears of joy erupted on the Tennessee Tech sideline. For everything the Golden Eagles had gone through over the course of the 2023 campaign, that moment was the culmination of it all. The highest of highs, the lowest of lows – Tech had been through it all. On Saturday, head coach Dewayne Alexander told his Golden Eagle charges to just go out there and have fun. That they did – leaving Nissan Stadium with a 35-0 victory over Tennessee State. It is the first shutout in the series, while it is the first shutout win for the Golden Eagles since 2013 – blanking Austin Peay in that contest – and only the fourth for the program since 2000.

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – As the weekly accolades continue to roll in on Monday, Tennessee Tech freshman quarterback Jordyn Potts was named an honorable mention for the FedEx Ground FCS National Freshman of the Week. Potts, a true freshman out of Powell, Tenn., threw a Tech-freshman single-game record five touchdown passes in the Golden Eagles’ heartbreaking 44-41 overtime loss to No. 18/21-ranked UT Martin on Saturday. He was one touchdown pass shy of tying Bailey Fisher’s program-record six touchdown passes, set in 2019 at Eastern Illinois.

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – With UT Martin facing 3rd-and-7 in the overtime session at the Tennessee Tech 9-yard-line, the Golden Eagle defense looked to hold the Skyhawks out of the end zone and force another go at a score. UT Martin quarterback Kinkead Dent fired toward Zoe Roberts and Cameron Hudson was there, batting the ball downward. The play wasn’t over though – Roberts reached out his hand and kept the ball from hitting the ground and managed to pull the ball in to give UT Martin the heartbreaking 44-41 victory over the Golden Eagles on Homecoming Saturday at Tucker Stadium.

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – With three games remaining in Tennessee Tech’s 2023 football season, the Golden Eagles face a challenge, but there’s still plenty to play for. Tech’s final three opponents of the season – UT Martin, Gardner-Webb and Tennessee State – are all in the top tier of the Big South-Ohio Valley Conference Football Association standings, but none of them enter their contests with the Golden Eagles undefeated. This week’s opponent – UT Martin – fell to Gardner-Webb last week in a 38-34 thriller. Gardner-Webb lost 27-25 to Tennessee State at Nissan Stadium. Tennessee State dropped a 20-10 decision to the Skyhawks.

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – The Tennessee Tech defense meant business on Saturday. Tim Coutras had two interceptions, including one for a touchdown, Kanstin Brooks almost had a pick-six of his own, then Jyron Gilmore forced a fumble and Aaron Swafford took another fumble back to the house. Then there was Daniel Rickert. Seven tackles with two sacks. Solid game, but hold on, there’s more. Add on two forced fumbles – and he’s not done yet. He also had two fumble recoveries, including a 20-yard touchdown. The defensive effort was huge as the Golden Eagles left Pittsburgh with a 38-13 victory over Robert Morris on Saturday to earn their first Big South-Ohio Valley Conference Football Association victory, improving to 3-5 on the season, 1-2 in the league.

ORANGEBURG, S.C. – South Carolina State scored 14 seconds into the game and it looked like the Bulldogs were going to set the pace with that early score. However, that wasn’t the case at all. Tennessee Tech scored 28 unanswered points as the host Bulldogs never saw the end zone again as the Golden Eagles got a boost from true freshman quarterback Jordyn Potts and the rushing attack from Justin Pegues and Marcus Knight as Tech prevailed 28-7. Knight rushed for 86 yards on 16 carries, averaging 5.4 yards per tote, as he had three touchdowns in the contest. He is the first Golden Eagle to rush for three scores in a game since Bailey Fisher against Western Illinois in 2019.

But the Golden Eagles were already fighting an uphill battle as Lindenwood returner Spencer Redd took Devin Parker's opening kickoff and returned it 99 yards for a touchdown – the first kickoff returned for a touchdown against the Golden Eagles since UT Martin in 2016.

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Thunderstorms may have shortened Tennessee Tech Football’s work on Saturday, but as the Golden Eagles completed their first scrimmage at Tucker Stadium, there were a lot of positive signs. Offensively, the Tech rushing attack saw a lot of big gains as Justin Pegues, Jordan Harris and Montana transfer Marcus Knight each piled up solid yardage numbers in the scrimmage.
