BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – Tennessee Tech infielder Eddie Garza was recognized as the Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week for the first time in his career, as announced by the league Monday afternoon.
Garza was a key cog to the Golden Eagles' weekend sweep of Southern Indiana, slashing .667/.692/1.417 with three home runs, four runs scored, and a team-high nine RBI during the week. The junior opened play with a pinch-hit single and run scored against Lipscomb in the team's midweek tilt on Wednesday.
In the series opener with USI, he smashed his first long ball of the year, a three-run shot to left field that resulted in the game-winning RBI. He added a clutch, two-run single to right-center field for some needed insurance in the fifth. Garza erupted for a pair of two-run long balls on Sunday, leaving the yard in back-to-back innings in the fifth and sixth to help the Golden Eagles finish the sweep and lock down sole possession of first place in the OVC standings.
The Rio Grande City, Texas native is the third Golden Eagle to earn OVC Player of the Week honors on the year, with catcher Mack Whitcomb winning the first of the year on Feb. 17 and center fielder Nicho Jordan claiming the accolade on Mar. 24.
Next on the docket for Tech is a trip north to Charleston, Ill. and a three-game OVC series at Eastern Illinois starting on Thursday afternoon with a 3:00 p.m. CT tilt. First pitch is slated for 1:00 p.m. for the final two games on Friday and Saturday.
