Tech women's basketball honored by Cookeville, Putnam County mayors at awards luncheon

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Cookeville Mayor Laurin Wheaton read out a long list of accomplishments the Tennessee Tech women’s basketball team achieved during the 2022-23 season with Putnam County Mayor Randy Porter on Monday afternoon, citing details from a joint proclamation from the city and county. It certainly was an impressive list, culminating in the Golden Eagles’ 10th Ohio Valley Conference tournament championship – its first since the 1999-2000 campaign – as well as the team’s first NCAA tournament victory since 1990.

CHARLESTON, Ill. – With the Tennessee Tech women’s basketball team trailing 57-52 with just over four minutes to play, the Golden Eagles weren’t worried. After all, they had already overcome that deficit already in the contest. Jada Guinn turned it up down the stretch, scoring eight points in the final 10 minutes, including 4-for-4 from the free-throw line, as well as three rebounds, an assist, a steal and a block as she helped guide the Golden Eagles back to a thrilling 66-61 victory over Eastern Illinois on Saturday. With that, next week’s Ohio Valley Conference tournament in Evansville is set. Tech (19-9, 13-5 OVC), as the No. 3-seed, will face the winner of SIUE/Tennessee State on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. The winner of that game will face No. 2-seed Eastern Illinois on Friday.

Carter, Owens lead 3-point assault as Tech tops USI

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Tennessee Tech surged out to a big lead and never looked back on Thursday night as Maaliya Owens and Peyton Carter had big nights to lead the Golden Eagles to a 78-57 victory over Southern Indiana. Tech improved to 18-9 with one game remaining in the regular season, 12-5 in the Ohio Valley Conference. Owens needed just one 3-pointer to tie Dana (Bilyeu) McWilliams for the senior record of 74 set back in 1992-93, but she tied it on her first shot, then broke it on her second 3-pointer of the quarter. She ended the night with six 3-pointers – just a shade short of her nine 3-pointer effort in the previous meeting against the Screaming Eagles – which also puts her seven 3-pointers away of tying Allison Clark and Blair Bowens’ single-season 3-point record at 86 each.

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Tennessee Tech fans might be forgiven for a slight feeling of déjà vu on Thursday night at the Hooper Eblen Center as the Golden Eagles put together another strong outing against Lindenwood, almost mirroring its previous contest against the Lions back in December. Tech (16-9, 10-5 Ohio Valley Conference) cruised to a 71-39 victory over the Lions, using a 10-0 run in the second quarter to help close the door early. The Golden Eagles also accomplished something they haven’t done in some time – securing double-digit wins in the OVC for the fifth straight season, the first time the team has done that stretch since the 2001-02 campaign.

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Saturday’s contest between the Tennessee Tech and Southeast Missouri women felt like a tournament contest. While SEMO kept it close by outscoring Tech 43-37 in the second half, the Golden Eagles were able to leave the Show Me Center with a 76-72 victory on Saturday afternoon.

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Tennessee Tech soared out on a 12-0 run to open Thursday’s game and never looked back as the Golden Eagles soared to a 69-52 victory over visiting Morehead State at the Hooper Eblen Center. COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – The success of Tennessee Tech women’s basketball on the court, in the classroom and in the community over the last four years has been well-documented.    Ask any coach, and they will be the first to acknowledge the important role a strong strength and conditioning program plays in any winning program. Coach Matt Hewett, Tennessee Tech’s Director of Athletic Performance, took over the reins as the strength coach for women’s basketball in the spring of 2018, and his impact was felt immediately.
