Tech women's basketball honored by Cookeville, Putnam County mayors at awards luncheon

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Cookeville Mayor Laurin Wheaton read out a long list of accomplishments the Tennessee Tech women’s basketball team achieved during the 2022-23 season with Putnam County Mayor Randy Porter on Monday afternoon, citing details from a joint proclamation from the city and county. It certainly was an impressive list, culminating in the Golden Eagles’ 10th Ohio Valley Conference tournament championship – its first since the 1999-2000 campaign – as well as the team’s first NCAA tournament victory since 1990.

Tech women optimistic for the future after ending season to No. 1-seeded Indiana

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – As the buzzer sounded at Assembly Hall sounding the end of the contest, there were tears. Of course there would be – the tremendous journey the Tennessee Tech women’s basketball went on was an arduous one with a lot to celebrate. The Golden Eagles accomplished a lot – the program’s 10th Ohio Valley Conference tournament championship, its 11th NCAA tournament appearance, its fourth NCAA tournament victory. But with the bonds the team built, the sisterhood they formed, the tears were earnest and deserved.

Golden Eagle women back to work with No. 1 Indiana on the radar

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Tennessee Tech women’s basketball head coach Kim Rosamond’s message to the players at the end of Friday’s practice was a simple one.  “You belong here.”  After all, the Golden Eagles have never shied away from any competition, playing many of the nation’s top programs over the years.  They’ll definitely face their toughest test of the season on Saturday morning as Tech (23-9) takes on regional No. 1-seed Indiana. Tipoff is scheduled for 11:30 am. Eastern/10:30 a.m. Central.

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Tennessee Tech’s season is not over yet – far from it. For the first time in 23 years, the Golden Eagles are heading back to the NCAA Tournament.  With a program as tradition-rich as Tennessee Tech is, it’s been a long wait and for Kim Rosamond, her staff and everyone who wears the Purple and Gold, it’s good to be back.  The Golden Eagles stunned one of the country’s stingiest defenses and tournament No. 1-seed Little Rock with a 54-46 victory in the Ohio Valley Conference championship game at the Ford Center on Saturday with a slow-and-steady effort that broke down the Trojans’ defensive effort.

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Trailing by 10 with just over six minutes remaining in the contest, the Tennessee Tech women’s basketball team needed a run at just the right time. After getting an 11-point streak in the first quarter, the Golden Eagles knew it was possible. And Tech found it through some incredible play around the lineup as the Golden Eagles went on a 17-2 run to close out the game and take a 66-61 victory over Eastern Illinois on Friday in the Ohio Valley Conference Basketball Championship semifinals at the Ford Center.

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Anna Walker came out in force, pacing the Tennessee Tech women’s basketball team in its Ohio Valley Conference quarterfinal contest against SIUE on Thursday. She had eight points alone in the first quarter and finished with 16 in the contest to lead all scorers as the Golden Eagles took a 76-62 victory over the Cougars. Tech wins its 20th game of the season and advances to Friday’s semifinal against Eastern Illinois. Tipoff in that contest is slated for 3:30 p.m. Dylan Vazzano and Frank Harrell will have the call on 106.1 The Eagle, while Connor Onion and Teresa Phillips will have the broadcast on ESPN+ (subscription required). The 20 wins gives Tech that mark for back-to-back seasons, the first time for the Golden Eagles to win back-to-back 20 wins since 2004-05 and 2005-06. It is also the third straight appearance in the tournament semifinals.

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – They say the waiting is the hardest part, but the Tennessee Tech women’s basketball team is taking advantage of the first-round bye as the Golden Eagles get set to hit the road to the Ohio Valley Conference Basketball Championships. While play kicks off Wednesday in the postseason event, the Golden Eagles will face the winner of Tennessee State vs. SIUE, who tip off at 3:30 p.m. Tech’s first game of the tournament will be the quarterfinals on Thursday, slated to tip off at 3:30 p.m. from the Ford Center in Evansville.

CHARLESTON, Ill. – With the Tennessee Tech women’s basketball team trailing 57-52 with just over four minutes to play, the Golden Eagles weren’t worried. After all, they had already overcome that deficit already in the contest. Jada Guinn turned it up down the stretch, scoring eight points in the final 10 minutes, including 4-for-4 from the free-throw line, as well as three rebounds, an assist, a steal and a block as she helped guide the Golden Eagles back to a thrilling 66-61 victory over Eastern Illinois on Saturday. With that, next week’s Ohio Valley Conference tournament in Evansville is set. Tech (19-9, 13-5 OVC), as the No. 3-seed, will face the winner of SIUE/Tennessee State on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. The winner of that game will face No. 2-seed Eastern Illinois on Friday.

Tech women close out regular season Saturday at Eastern Illinois
Tech women close out regular season Saturday at Eastern Illinois

CHARLESTON, Ill. – For the most part, the field for the Ohio Valley Conference tournament in Evansville next week is set. Little Rock is the No. 1 seed, Eastern Illinois No. 2 and Tennessee Tech No. 3, while Southeast Missouri has locked up the No. 5 spot. From there, it’s Morehead State, SIUE, Tennessee State and UT Martin trying to solidify their official spot with one of the first-round byes still in play. One might think that Saturday’s contest between Tennessee Tech and Eastern Illinois would have no stakes, but far from it. Even though the Golden Eagles and the Panthers know exactly when their tournament run starts next week in Evansville, there’s still a little matter of pride on the line on Saturday when the two teams square off for the regular-season finale.

Carter, Owens lead 3-point assault as Tech tops USI

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Tennessee Tech surged out to a big lead and never looked back on Thursday night as Maaliya Owens and Peyton Carter had big nights to lead the Golden Eagles to a 78-57 victory over Southern Indiana. Tech improved to 18-9 with one game remaining in the regular season, 12-5 in the Ohio Valley Conference. Owens needed just one 3-pointer to tie Dana (Bilyeu) McWilliams for the senior record of 74 set back in 1992-93, but she tied it on her first shot, then broke it on her second 3-pointer of the quarter. She ended the night with six 3-pointers – just a shade short of her nine 3-pointer effort in the previous meeting against the Screaming Eagles – which also puts her seven 3-pointers away of tying Allison Clark and Blair Bowens’ single-season 3-point record at 86 each.

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – As Tennessee Tech enters its final week of the regular season, the tournament seeding pretty much set for the Golden Eagles. Tech (17-9, 11-5 Ohio Valley Conference) are pretty much locked into the No. 3-seed in next week’s tournament at Evansville’s Ford Center. The Golden Eagles could tie Eastern Illinois with two victories and two Panther losses – including to Tech on Saturday – but EIU presently holds a tiebreaker over the Golden Eagles with a win over current league leader Little Rock. The next team back from the Golden Eagles – Southeast Missouri – stands in with an 8-8 record, giving Tech a three-game cushion and meaning that no team behind the Golden Eagles can catch them in the standings. That said, only Lindenwood has been eliminated in the race, meaning Tech’s opponent on Thursday – Southern Indiana -- has something to play for.

Tech women cruise to season sweep over Lindenwood

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Tennessee Tech fans might be forgiven for a slight feeling of déjà vu on Thursday night at the Hooper Eblen Center as the Golden Eagles put together another strong outing against Lindenwood, almost mirroring its previous contest against the Lions back in December. Tech (16-9, 10-5 Ohio Valley Conference) cruised to a 71-39 victory over the Lions, using a 10-0 run in the second quarter to help close the door early. The Golden Eagles also accomplished something they haven’t done in some time – securing double-digit wins in the OVC for the fifth straight season, the first time the team has done that stretch since the 2001-02 campaign.

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – When Tennessee Tech faced UT Martin in early January, the Golden Eagle women's basketball team had a slugfest early on with the Skyhawks. The Tech women prevailed 61-49 back on January 7, and now the Golden Eagles will try to make that happen again on Saturday as Tech hosts the Skyhawks on Saturday. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. Roger Ealey will have the call on 106.1 The Eagle, while Dylan Vazzano and Frank Harrell will broadcast the game on ESPN+ (subscription required). The game will also be available locally on WCTE and student radio WTTU.

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Tennessee Tech certainly remembers the last time it faced Tennessee State at the Gentry Center as Gia Adams knocked down a game-winning desperation heave to win the game for the Lady Tigers in overtime. Now, with the Ohio Valley Conference race down to its final five games of the regular season, the Golden Eagles are taking no chances as they look to take down TSU on Saturday afternoon. Tipoff from the Gentry Center is scheduled for 1 p.m. Roger Ealey will broadcast the game on 106.1 The Eagle, while it will also be carried on ESPN+ (subscription required).

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Southern Indiana jumped out to an early lead, but Tennessee Tech used a 16-0 run to surge ahead in the first quarter and never looked back as the Golden Eagles topped the Screaming Eagles 79-59 on Thursday night. Tech improved to 15-8 on the season and stand at 9-4 in the Ohio Valley Conference. The Golden Eagles continue the campaign on Saturday as they head to Nashville to take on Tennessee State. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.

Roger Ealey and Frank Harrell will have the broadcast on 106.1 The Eagle, while Dylan Vazzano and Michael Cooper will handle broadcast duties on ESPN+ (subscription required).

Tech women use late run to hold off Redhawks
Tech women use late run to hold off Redhawks

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Thursday’s loss at Morehead State bothered the Tennessee Tech women’s basketball team. When Saturday came around and Southeast Missouri coming into town, the Golden Eagles were determined to do better. Junior Anna Walker came out in force, nearly collecting a double-double in the first quarter alone, then solid performances from Maaliya Owens, Reghan Grimes, Jada Guinn and the rest of the Tech lineup helped stave off any late comeback bids by the Redhawks on Saturday as the Golden Eagles claimed a 71-65 victory in the Eblen Center in the team’s annual Play4Kay game.

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – If the previous meeting with Southeast Missouri is any indication, Saturday’s showdown with the Redhawks could be an exciting one. Tennessee Tech hosts the Redhawk women at 1 p.m. at the Eblen Center. Roger Ealey will have the call on 106.1 The Eagle, while Dylan Vazzano and Seth Bruton will handle broadcast duties on ESPN+ (subscription required). Saturday’s game is Tech’s Play4Kay contest as the team encourages fan to wear pink and support the Kay Yow Cancer Fund’s work in cancer research.

Tech women fall in suspenseful finish at Morehead
Tech women fall in suspenseful finish at Morehead

MOREHEAD, Ky. – Morehead State stayed just far enough ahead of Tennessee Tech in the fourth quarter as the home-standing Eagles scored 12 points at the free-throw line and got 15 points from Sandra Lin in the final 10 minutes as MSU took a 70-68 victory over the Golden Eagles on Thursday night. Tech falls to 13-8, 7-4 in the Ohio Valley Conference. The Golden Eagles return to action on Saturday as they host Southeast Missouri at 1 p.m. Anna Walker tied Tech’s largest lead of the game with 9:47 remaining in the contest, but a 6-0 run by Morehead (9-13, 5-6 OVC) with two second-chance layups and a pair of Lin free throws put the home squad back up by one with 8:14 remaining.

MOREHEAD, Ky. – The Tennessee Tech women’s basketball team will try to get some momentum building on Thursday as the Golden Eagles head up to Morehead State for a Thursday night battle. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. Central time. Rob Schabert will have the call on 106.1 The Eagle, while the game will also be streamed on ESPN+ (subscription required). After a tough battle with Little Rock on Saturday, the Golden Eagles look to get back on the winning side of things with under a month to go in the regular season. Tech (13-7, 7-3 Ohio Valley Conference) stands in third as February play begins, three games behind conference leader Eastern Illinois, who is still undefeated in league play at 10-0. Little Rock, whose only loss is to the Panthers, stands at 9-1.

Golden Eagle women fall in nail-biter to Little Rock
Golden Eagle women fall in nail-biter to Little Rock

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Saturday’s game was everything one could ask for in an Ohio Valley Conference matchup between two of the top three teams. The Tennessee Tech women battled back from a 12-point deficit and it was a battle the rest of the way going down to the wire. Little Rock might have won the day, escaping the Eblen Center with a 66-63 victory, but Tennessee Tech certainly made them earn it. The improvement showed from the first meeting to the next and it makes a potential showdown in Evansville an intriguing one. So 63 points? That’s not just the most any OVC team has scored against the Trojans this season, it’s the fifth-most points scored by any opponents in Little Rock’s 21 games played. The teams that have scored more? Arkansas (93), Oral Roberts (74), Auburn (70) and Alabama (69).

Tech women look to avenge Little Rock loss Saturday
Tech women look to avenge Little Rock loss Saturday

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – It hasn’t been a long time since Tennessee Tech last saw Little Rock – just nine days ago, to be exact – but there’s no question the Golden Eagles have had Saturday’s date circled in that short time. After falling 61-45 in the Stephens Center, the Tech women will look at the Trojans’ return game as a chance to move up in the Ohio Valley Conference standings as Little Rock comes to the Eblen Center on Saturday afternoon. Tipoff is slated for 1 p.m. Roger Ealey and Frank Harrell will have the call on 106.1 The Eagle, while Dylan Vazzano and Michael Cooper will broadcast the game on ESPN+ (subscription required). The game will also be carried on student radio 88.5 WTTU.

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Tennessee Tech got off to a hot start in each of the first three quarters as the Golden Eagles’ defense slowed down the conference’s top offense as Tech topped SIUE 89-62. COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – As the Tennessee Tech women’s basketball team nears the midway point of the Ohio Valley Conference schedule, the Golden Eagles will start to see some familiar faces as the OVC race begins to heat up with a month remaining in the regular season.  Tech (12-6, 6-2 OVC) will start its second go-round in the OVC on Thursday as SIUE comes into the Hooper Eblen Center.  Please note that Thursday’s game is a 3 p.m. start time after the men’s game was selected as a wild-card pick by ESPN to be broadcast nationwide on ESPNews. Roger Ealey and Frank Harrell will have the call on 106.1 The Eagle, while Dylan Vazzano and Michael Cooper will handle the broadcast on ESPN+ (subscription required).

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Saturday’s contest between the Tennessee Tech and Southeast Missouri women felt like a tournament contest. While the Golden Eagles lead for nearly the entire game, the Redhawks never stayed too far away, even after Tech took a 10-point lead midway through the opening stanza. While SEMO kept it close by outscoring Tech 43-37 in the second half, the Golden Eagles were able to leave the Show Me Center with a 76-72 victory on Saturday afternoon.

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – With Thursday’s loss to Little Rock in the rear-view mirror, the Tennessee Tech women’s basketball team gets back in action on Saturday looking to build back momentum in the Ohio Valley Conference race. The Golden Eagles will get that chance on Saturday as they take on a Southeast Missouri team on a hot streak. Tipoff from the Show Me Center is set for 2 p.m. Dylan Vazzano will have the call on 106.1 The Eagle, while the game will be broadcast on ESPN+ (subscription required).

Tech women head to Little Rock for first OVC meeting

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – It’ll be a battle for second place in the Ohio Valley Conference standings on Thursday night as the Tennessee Tech women will enter uncharted territory for them as the Golden Eagles take on OVC newcomer Little Rock for the first time.  Tipoff from the Stephens Center is set for 5 p.m. Dylan Vazzano will have the call on 106.1 The Eagle, while Kyle Deckelbaum and Dorian Craft will handle broadcast duties on ESPN+ (subscription required).  Certainly, it’s still early in the race as the conference sprint has only reached a third of the way through with plenty more to still be played, but the Golden Eagles (11-5, 5-1 OVC) find themselves knotted in the standings with the Trojans (8-9, 5-1 OVC) after Little Rock dropped a low-scoring 44-33 affair at Eastern Illinois on Saturday.

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Tennessee State came out on fire, but Tennessee Tech found a way to weather the storm as the Golden Eagles surged back to erase the early deficit and outscored the Lady Tigers in each of the final three quarters to come away with an 83-76 victory on Saturday afternoon in the Hooper Eblen Center. Tech improved to 11-5, 5-1 in the OVC, while the Lady Tigers fell to 7-10, 2-4 in the conference. With Little Rock’s loss to Eastern Illinois, the Golden Eagles move into a tie for second with the Trojans with Tech traveling to Little Rock on Thursday. Jada Guinn had a nearly perfect game, shooting 8-for-9 from the field and 8-for-9 at the free-throw line to score a career-high 24 points. Maaliya Owens followed up her career night on Thursday with another solid showing with 21 points, including five 3-pointers, while true freshman Reghan Grimes posted a new season-best with 17 points.

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Tennessee Tech soared out on a 12-0 run to open Thursday’s game and never looked back as the Golden Eagles soared to a 69-52 victory over visiting Morehead State at the Hooper Eblen Center. Senior Maaliya Owens set a new career high in scoring with 24 points as well as a new top mark in 3-pointers made as she knocked down six of her 12 tries. Owens finished the game hitting 9-of-17 shots, while she also collected two rebounds, two assists and a blocked shot. The balanced effort only saw one more double-digit scorer as Kiera Hill set her new Tech best in scoring, tallying 10 points on 5-of-8 shooting, adding on to a solid night with seven rebounds and an assist.

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – As Morehead State comes into the Hooper Eblen Center on Thursday night, it’s a much-improved squad from a season ago. The visiting Eagles bring a 6-9 record, 2-2 in the Ohio Valley Conference. Last season, Morehead State finished 1-26 and 0-17 in the OVC in Cayla Petree’s first year at the helm. After a nearly-complete revamp of the lineup, including nine international players and five Division I transfers, this year’s squad has already shown vast improvement and could make things very interesting for the Golden Eagles (9-5, 3-1 OVC) on Thursday night. Tip-off for Thursday’s game is set for 5:30 p.m. Roger Ealey and Frank Harrell will have the game on 106.1 The Eagle, while Dylan Vazzano and Michael Cooper will broadcast the game on ESPN+ (subscription required). The game will also be televised locally on WCTE and heard on student radio station 88.5 FM.

MARTIN, Tenn. – An 11-0 run in the second quarter provided a big lift for the Tennessee Tech women on Saturday afternoon and while the host UT Martin squad made things interesting in the fourth quarter, the Golden Eagles held on to take a 61-49 victory over the Skyhawks at the Elam Center. Tech (9-5, 3-1 Ohio Valley Conference) earned its third-straight road victory and will spend the next week at home as the Golden Eagles host Morehead State on Thursday and Tennessee State on Saturday. The Golden Eagles had four players in double-figure scoring, led by true freshman Reghan Grimes with 12 points – as well as a team-high six rebounds. Maaliya Owens scored 11, while Jordan Brock and Reagan Hurst each had 10 points.

MARTIN, Tenn. – After a tough game on Thursday night, the Tennessee Tech women's basketball team will put that game in the rearview and get set for Saturday's opponent – long-time OVC rival UT Martin. Tip-off from the Elam Center on Saturday is set for 1 p.m. Roger Ealey will have the call on 106.1 The Eagle, while Chris Brinkley will handle the broadcast on ESPN+ (subscription required). Thursday's game couldn't have been any closer against Eastern Illinois as the OVC front-runner took the 67-62 victory. The Panthers jumped out to an early lead only for the Golden Eagles to close the gap at the half and take a lead in the third quarter. EIU retook the lead late and was able to stay on top as the final seconds ticked away.

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – It was fitting that Reagan Hurst had a great night in front of the home crowd as she scored a season-best 19 points in her redshirt freshman campaign. The product from nearby Upperman High shot 8-for-12 from the field along the way as the reigning OVC Freshman of the Week also had two rebounds, an assist, a steal and a block – and was also honored as the Student-Athlete of the Game during the men’s half of the twinbill. But Eastern Illinois gave a fight as the Ohio Valley Conference overall record leaders escaped the Hooper Eblen Center with a 67-62 victory on Thursday night.

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – The second week of the Ohio Valley Conference slate is an intriguing one for the Tennessee Tech women’s team as the Golden Eagles will entertain conference leader Eastern Illinois on Thursday night, then hit the road for a showdown at UT Martin on Saturday. Thursday’s game at the Hooper Eblen Center is Upper Cumberland Night as residents of Putnam County and the rest of the Upper Cumberland region will be able to receive half-off admission to the Eastern Illinois doubleheader.

ST. CHARLES, Mo. – As Tennessee Tech heads to Lindenwood on Saturday, it’s a whole new experience.
