Bio

2023 (Freshman): Working his way up the chart after injuries to other Tech quarterbacks, Potts played in eight games, earning his first start in the Oct. 14 game at South Carolina State. In his first full game, he completed 16 of his 22 passes (72.7 percent) for 202 yards. He had a career day in the Homecoming contest against UT Martin, throwing for 209 yards and five touchdowns -- one short of the single-game record set by Bailey Fisher vs. Eastern Illinois in 2019 and setting the single-game freshman record. Potts also threw for 206 yards the following week against Gardner-Webb. He ended the 2023 season with 1,132 passing yards on 108 of 204 passing, collecting eight touchdowns. Potts also rushed for 91 yards and two touchdowns on 56 carries, including 77 yards and a touchdown at Robert Morris.

In his prep career, Potts has thrown for 96 touchdowns, rushed for 20 more and has 10,247 total offensive yards. He has the eighth most passing TDs in TSSAA history as well as the seventh-most total touchdowns and seventh-most offensive yards. He was noted by Sports Illustrated in 2021 as a One To Know.

This past season, Potts threw for 2,757 yards and 28 touchdowns, completing 171 of his 270 passes. He also rushed 40 times for 129 yards with four touchdowns.

Golden Eagles look to close out regular season Saturday with Big South-OVC title

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Saturday could be a huge day for the Tennessee Tech football team. Depending on what happens Saturday at Tucker Stadium when the Golden Eagles host Eastern Illinois, as well as in Nashville and Martin, it could be championship worthy. It all starts in Cookeville though as the 6-5 Golden Eagles host the 3-8 Panthers. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:02 p.m. Roger Ealey and Marcelo Metzelar will have the call on 106.1 The Eagle, while Dylan Vazzano and Sam Brooks will narrate the action on ESPN+ (subscription required).

MARTIN, Tenn. – While the Sergeant York Trophy is in play Saturday with the winner between UT Martin and Tennessee Tech taking home the bronze bust, there are bigger stakes as well. If Tennessee Tech wins out and Southeast Missouri falls in its final two games of the season, the Golden Eagles will be Big South-Ohio Valley Conference Football Association champions. It’s a tall order, but not an out-of-question one as the Golden Eagles head to Martin for Saturday’s contest. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.

Golden Eagles bring in Lindenwood for Homecoming Saturday
Golden Eagles bring in Lindenwood for Homecoming Saturday

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – As the calendar page turns from October to November and the final month of the 2024 Tennessee Tech football season begins, the temperatures are getting cooler and the fall colors are starting to shine through. CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – For a half, the Tennessee Tech football team went toe-to-toe with the No. 9-ranked Southeast Missouri squad, creating turnovers and opportunities. However, the Redhawk defense showed its strength, forcing the Golden Eagles into three turnovers – which created 13 SEMO points – and held Tech to 31 yards on the ground and 262 overall as Southeast Missouri claimed the 34-3 victory on Saturday afternoon. Tech (2-4, 2-1 Big South-Ohio Valley Conference) returns to action next week as it hits the road again to Western Illinois for a 3 p.m. kickoff.

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – South Carolina State jumped out to an early lead, but it wasn’t insurmountable. The Tennessee Tech team had opportunities and reclaimed the lead with some timely takeaways and had a chance to win the game on a last-second field goal. However, the kick sailed wide left as time expired, leading the visiting Bulldogs to a 22-20 win over the Golden Eagles on Saturday in their non-conference affair. Where Tech had relied on the running game in the last two games, both teams presented an aerial attack, combining for a whopping 708 yards through the air and just 114 yards on the ground. South Carolina State (3-2) was expected to come in with a strong quarterback in Eric Phoenix and he lived up to the hype, throwing for 412 yards and three touchdowns.

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee Tech Football team is red-hot in Big South-Ohio Valley Conference, standing alone at the top of the standings with a 2-0 mark, its first in league play since the 2011 campaign. Tech (2-2 overall) will try to keep the momentum building this weekend as the Golden Eagles step back into non-conference action as they welcome South Carolina State to Tucker Stadium for the first time on Saturday afternoon as they try to send their third Bulldog opponent in their first five games back to the doghouse. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Dylan Vazzano and Sam Brooks will have the call on ESPN+ (subscription required), while Roger Ealey and Marcelo Metzelar will narrate the action on 106.1 The Eagle.

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – For the first time since 2011, the Tennessee Tech football team is starting conference play with a 2-0 record, but it was an adventure to get there. Seeing the effects of Hurricane-turned-Tropical Storm Helene first-hand as they made their way to Charlotte, then to Boiling Springs, the Golden Eagles overcame those adversities to take a 52-21 victory over the defending Big South-Ohio Valley Conference champ in a statement victory.

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Tennessee Tech Football team is at the top of the Big South-Ohio Valley Conference standings with Southeast Missouri after a big win this past Saturday over Tennessee State and the Golden Eagles don't want it to be a short stay. It'll be a big test, however, as Tech heads into Boiling Springs to take on Gardner-Webb, who made its second-straight appearance to the Football Championship Subdivision Playoffs and tied with UT Martin for the Big South-OVC championship last season.

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – When it mattered the most, the Tennessee Tech defense came through. The Golden Eagles found ways to pressure Tennessee State quarterback Draylen Ellis, sacking him seven times and hurried him out of the pocket seven times. Tech’s defense also held State to exactly zero rushing yards on 27 carries. Defensive back Ty Moss then sealed the deal with a 56-yard interception return for a touchdown with just over a minute remaining in the contest to lead the Golden Eagles to a 24-14 victory over their in-state rivals and claim the first salvo in the hunt for the Sergeant York Trophy. Tech improves to 1-2 overall and 1-0 in the Big South-Ohio Valley Conference Football Association, putting the first victory in head coach Bobby Wilder’s column in his Cookeville career. It’s also the first back-to-back wins over the Tigers since winning three straight between 2015 and 2017.

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – As Tennessee State and Tennessee Tech lock horns on Saturday to open their Big South-Ohio Valley Conference slate, both teams take the field with something to prove. Eddie George’s Tigers enter the game with two HBCU wins and a rough outing at FCS No. 1North Dakota State, but TSU probably had the date circled after the Golden Eagles routed the Tigers 35-0 in last season’s finale at Nissan Stadium. It was Tech’s first defensive shutout since 2014.

ATHENS, Ga. – Facing the top-ranked team in all of college football is a daunting task to say the least. And while the 48-3 result against No. 1 Georgia still puts another notch in the loss column, the Tennessee Tech football team accomplished its goal against the Bulldogs with a respectable effort. Injuries were kept to a minimum, the Golden Eagles (0-2) kept the game respectable in the first half, Tech scored its first-ever points against the Bulldogs (2-0) in the third meeting and the team is coming back with a decent payday to help improve the program’s future.

ATHENS, Ga. – Tennessee Tech came excruciatingly close to knocking off a Football Bowl Subdvision opponent last weekend as the Golden Eagles saw Middle Tennessee emerge victorious with just seconds remaining on the clock in a 32-25 victory. Saturday, the Golden Eagles will stay in FBS territory as they head down to Athens to take on the top-ranked Georgia Bulldogs. Kickoff on Saturday is set for 1 p.m. Central, 2 p.m. Eastern. The game will be broadcast on SEC Network+ (streaming, SEC Network subscription required) with Jay Alter (play-by-play), Rocky Boiman (analyst) and Ashley Stroehlein (sideline reporter) on the call. BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – With the first week of the college football season in the books for all of Division I, awards are rolling out for top performances. Tennessee Tech claimed a Big South-Ohio Valley Conference Football Association weekly award on Monday as punter Spencer Ashby was named the league’s Freshman of the Week. In his first appearance with the Golden Eagles, the specialist from Geelong, Australia, put together a solid performance averaging 38.8 yards per attempt in his four tries. He had a game-long punt of 47 yards despite damp conditions and put two of his punts inside the Middle Tennessee 20-yard line.

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – On Saturday night just before midnight, Tennessee Tech took the lead against Middle Tennessee. But after the clock struck 12, Middle Tennessee ended the Golden Eagles’ Cinderella story. Tech (0-1) was so close. With just over a minute to go in the game, Jordan Yates hauled in a diving connection from Jordyn Potts to tie the game, then Hayden Olsen hit the PAT to give the Golden Eagles the 25-24 lead.

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – On the very day, almost to the very minute, when Tennessee Tech introduced Bobby Wilder as the new head coach of the Golden Eagle football team, Middle Tennessee was introducing Derek Mason as the new head coach of the Blue Raiders. It was purely coincidence, but it almost seemed fitting that the two coaches open their first seasons at the helm on the opposite sidelines.

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – It’s probably a little cliché when a new coach comes into a program and it’s suddenly declared a ‘new era.’ With the direction Bobby Wilder looks to take the Tennessee Tech football team, however, it is the literal truth. With the ever-changing landscape of college football, as well as the transfer portal and Name-Image-Likeness deals, the game is not the same as it was even 10 years ago.

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – As a team works toward a new season, it’s not uncommon to see some bumps and bruises along the way. With the Tennessee Tech football team entering Saturday’s Gathering of Eagles scrimmage, the numbers are a little more than expected with nearly 30 players sidelined from Saturday’s session.  “It’s hard to conduct what you’re trying to get done in practice and scrimmage and it’s not anything the kids are doing,” head coach Bobby Wilder said. “A lot of what’s happening are soft tissue injuries. They’re working hard and they’re trying to get back. With the opener two weeks away, it’s a true concern. Tonight, we had 15 true freshmen out here playing a lot of snaps. They played hard, but they’re freshmen. They’re going to make mistakes. I love the effort. The number one priority right now is we’ve got to get healthy.

Golden Eagles dig deep and overcome adversity in first scrimmage
Golden Eagles dig deep and overcome adversity in first scrimmage

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – As the first scrimmage for the Tennessee Tech football team went in the books, the defense set the pace early on and had some fantastic plays to antagonize their offensive teammates. Still, the offense wasn’t held empty-handed either as they put together some solid drives and converted in the red zone to put more than a few points on the board. While there were a couple of heated moments, the Golden Eagles shook them off and kept working. After all, finding ways to dig deep and overcome the adversity presented is one of the biggest lessons to learn.
