Defense wins the day during Spring Game
Defense wins the day during Spring Game

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee Tech defense won the day during Saturday’s spring game, but it certainly wasn’t a one-sided affair in the situational scrimmage as the Golden Eagles did see some offensive highlights as well. “I felt overall our football team got better today,” said Tech head coach Bobby Wilder. “I liked the attention to detail – it’s something that we’ve been working hard on. I feel like we played much faster today. The defense had some moments where they really shined. We had some big plays from the offense today. I felt like both quarterbacks (Dylan Laible and Jordyn Potts) performed very well and I was really pleased to see that good mix of returning offensive skill guys and the guys we brought in in January. They really showed the progress we’re making this spring.”

Golden Eagles showing energy, excitement in first spring sessions

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – As the Tennessee Tech football team took to the Tucker Stadium turf on Thursday, the energy was electric. While it was just the second session of the spring, the team looked seasoned and excited. The offense made big plays, while the defense shined. As the coaches instructed, the student-athletes leaned in on every instruction. They cheered each other on and even jokingly tried to distract their teammates on the opposite side of the ball. It was all in good fun, but the biggest takeaway is that the Golden Eagles are progressing nicely as the spring is really just beginning.

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – With UT Martin facing 3rd-and-7 in the overtime session at the Tennessee Tech 9-yard-line, the Golden Eagle defense looked to hold the Skyhawks out of the end zone and force another go at a score. UT Martin quarterback Kinkead Dent fired toward Zoe Roberts and Cameron Hudson was there, batting the ball downward. The play wasn’t over though – Roberts reached out his hand and kept the ball from hitting the ground and managed to pull the ball in to give UT Martin the heartbreaking 44-41 victory over the Golden Eagles on Homecoming Saturday at Tucker Stadium.

Tough night for offenses as North Alabama tops Golden Eagles

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – As rain fell on Tucker Stadium, it made it a long night for both offenses as Tennessee Tech and North Alabama combined for just one offensive touchdown in the contest. But that one touchdown and two more field goals proved to be the difference on Saturday as the Golden Eagles dropped their third straight game in the 2023 campaign with the visiting Lions taking a 20-7 victory on Saturday. Turnovers spoil Golden Eagle opener at No. 6 Furman
Turnovers spoil Golden Eagle opener at No. 6 Furman

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Last season, Furman’s defense was a ball hawk, standing as one of the best pass defenses in the Division I Football Championship Subdivision. The No. 6-ranked Paladins returned most of those players in the 2023 campaign and picked up right where they left off, picking off four Tennessee Tech passes – returning two for touchdowns – as Furman topped the Golden Eagles 45-10 on Thursday night.  Tech (0-1) returns to action next Saturday as the Golden Eagles head to Albuquerque to take on New Mexico.  The Golden Eagles had six turnovers in all in the contest, those leading to 28 points for the Paladins. However, even with the miscues, there were still positives in the contest for Tech. Through the first three quarters, the Golden Eagles had put up better offensive numbers than the Paladins, a credit to both Tech’s offense moving the ball and the defense – led by Aaron Swafford’s 12 tackles and a fumble recovery – making Furman’s offense work for what it did collect.

Defense powers through Gathering of Eagles scrimmage
Defense powers through Gathering of Eagles scrimmage

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – As the annual Gathering of Eagles came to a close, the Tennessee Tech football team saw great work from the defensive unit as the last three series ended with a turnover on downs, a Cole Putnam interception and a called sack to end the night, but that was just the tip of the iceberg for the defense on the evening. That’s not to say the offense was caught off-guard, because the attackers still found ways to get into the end zone as Maddux Richey connected to Hunter Barnhart for a 29-yard touchdown pass, Hayes Gibson and Ethan Roberts scored on quarterback keepers, while Gibson also had a 64-yard connection to Jordan Harris, who narrowly beat Gerald Kilgore in a footrace to the end zone. Hayden Olsen also kicked a 25-yard field goal and had two PATs, while Devin Parker also drilled a PAT through the upright.
