Future looks bright for Tech football after 2019 progress

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – With the 2019 season in the books, the future certainly looks bright for Tennessee Tech football. With a 6-6 finish after two consecutive years of 1-10 finishes, the Golden Eagles tied for second in the Football Championship Subdivision in increased wins. Sacramento State saw the biggest turnaround in 2019, going from 2-8 a year ago to going 9-3, including a 7-1 record in the Big Sky Conference. Tech, UT Martin and Southern Illinois all saw win increases of five to improve on their 2018 campaigns.

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Twenty-one Tennessee Tech football players will put on their uniforms for the last time on Saturday as the Golden Eagles close out the 2019 campaign against Tennessee State. But the tears aren’t being shed just yet nor the memories being recollected as there’s still plenty of business at hand for Tech in this 12th and final game of the season. Kickoff from Tucker Stadium is scheduled for 1:35 p.m. Dylan Vazzano and Sam Brooks will handle play-by-play coverage on ESPN+ (subscription required), while Roger Ealey and Buddy Pearson will tackle radio duties on 98.5 KISS FM.

RICHMOND, Ky. – Defense was the name of the game on Saturday as Tennessee Tech saw first-hand why Eastern Kentucky has one of the top defensive units in the Ohio Valley Conference. The Colonels yielded an early touchdown on short field for the Golden Eagles, then a 54-yard field goal, but that was it on offense for Tech as EKU topped the Golden Eagles 22-10 on Saturday from Roy Kidd Stadium.

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – The last time Tennessee Tech saw victory over Jacksonville State in Cookeville was a come-from-behind victory that spoiled the Gamecocks’ Ohio Valley Conference championship bid in 2010. The following year, the Golden Eagles won the OVC’s automatic bid to the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs. Granted, that’s talking about a year from now. Tennessee Tech head coach Dewayne Alexander isn’t finished talking about this year yet. With the 37-27 victory over Jacksonville State in Saturday’s Homecoming game, which snapped a seven-game losing streak to the Gamecocks, the Golden Eagles improve to 6-4 on the season – the most wins since going 7-4 in 2011 and tied for the 16th most wins in a single-season in Tech’s 98 seasons of play.

MURRAY, Ky. – Racer One ran around the track at Roy Stewart Stadium fairly quickly as Murray State turned a Tennessee Tech turnover into a touchdown drive. However, that was the only time Murray’s equine mascot made the trip around the field as the Golden Eagles scored 17 unanswered points to take a 17-7 victory and snap a three-game losing streak. “It was a response,” said Tech head coach Dwayne Alexander. “We have had a rough last few weeks and a couple of tough home losses. It shows you just how far this program has come. These guys are showing that they can respond. It started off with us down 7-0 and from there these guys just played their tail off."

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – By the time kickoff rolls around on Saturday, it will have been two weeks since the Tennessee Tech football team last took the field. The open date allowed the Golden Eagles to put a tough loss to UT Martin in the rearview mirror and look forward to the final five games of the 2019 regular season. After all, Tech has so much still to play for. The Golden Eagles host Austin Peay on Saturday afternoon with kickoff scheduled for 1:35 p.m. Dylan Vazzano and Sam Brooks will provide the call on ESPN+ (subscription required), while Roger Ealey and Buddy Pearson will handle the radio duties on 98.5 KISS FM.

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Following last week’s 43-37 double-overtime loss to Football Championship Subdivision No. 23 Southeast Missouri, the loss was tough for the Tennessee Tech football team, but one couldn’t help but feel optimistic for the rest of the season. After all, the Golden Eagles had literally stood toe-to-toe with one of the favorites to win the Ohio Valley Conference championship and had a play here or there gone another way, could have seen the result come out the other way. Needless to say, the loss helped build confidence within the Golden Eagles. Through their work last season and this year to this point, Tech has shown itself to be a contender in the Ohio Valley, but its work is far, far from finished. The Golden Eagles will have to prove that this week as they host UT Martin Saturday night at Tucker Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:05 p.m.

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – For the fourth week out of the five this season, the Tennessee Tech football team has earned another national honor from the Football Championship Subdivision media sources. This time it was senior linebacker Aderick Moore, earning the FCS National Defensive Player of the Week from College Sports Madness. After missing a week after an injury against Virginia-Wise, the Selma, Ala., native created three takeaways as he forced two fumbles, intercepted a pass for 20 yards, had a quarterback hurry and a tackle-for-loss to go along with his seven stops.

CHARLESTON, Ill. – The moment the ball is kicked off on Saturday, it’s a brand new start. Sure, the 3-1 start the Tennessee Tech football team has right now is fantastic, but as the Ohio Valley Conference schedule starts in earnest this weekend, that is what will determine the team’s postseason fate. The last time the Golden Eagles started 3-1 was 2011 – the year the Golden Eagles clinched a share of the OVC title with Jacksonville State and Eastern Kentucky (beating them both on their home fields) and earning the league’s automatic bid to the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs. But, make no mistake, every week is going to be a fight.

BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – As the Tennessee Tech football team heads into Ohio Valley Conference play with its first 3-1 start since 2011, the Golden Eagles added some accolades on Sunday after coming home in the wee hours of the morning from their 38-24 win over Western Illinois. Bailey Fisher was named the Ohio Valley Conference’s co-Offensive Player of the Week, splitting the honor with Jacksonville State wide receiver Josh Pearson (149 yds. on seven catches, three touchdowns), while Fisher also earned FCS National Player of the Week honors from the College Sports Madness website for his second national honor this season. Sophomore linebacker Seth Carlisle was named the OVC’s Defensive Player of the Week, while true freshman wide receiver/return specialist Metrius Fleming has named the conference’s Newcomer of the Week for the third time in four weeks.

MACOMB, Ill. – The song may say that the waiting is the hardest part. For the Tennessee Tech football team, the Golden Eagles started its first drive then had to wait as a lightning delay forced the teams back into the locker rooms. So they waited. And waited. And waited some more.

MACOMB, Ill. – As the Tennessee Tech football team loads up the buses on Friday to hit the road for its longest road trip of the year – a visit to Western Illinois – the Golden Eagles know they’ll be in for a challenge as they close out the non-conference portion of the schedule. Tech will take on the Fighting Leathernecks at 3 p.m. on Saturday. The game will be broadcast on 98.5 KISS FM with Roger Ealey and Dylan Vazzano providing the call, while the game will also be streamed online on ESPN3, with Brendan Reidy and Michael Harms handling those duties.

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Just because a team is a lower-division program, that doesn’t make the contest any less of a challenge. The Tennessee Tech football team has fallen into the trap before, last falling to a Division II team in 1988. That said, that Division II team was Liberty and they’re now in the Football Bowl Subdivision, as is Troy, who beat the Golden Eagles in 1978 and 1980. Then there’s also Jacksonville State (victors in 1979 and 1980) and Abilene Christian (the winner in 1987) who are now among the Football Championship Subdivision ranks.

OXFORD, Ohio – Tennessee Tech head coach Dewayne Alexander took his players into the locker room Saturday afternoon following the Golden Eagles’ 48-17 loss to FBS school Miami (Ohio) and told them to keep their heads up. “On Monday, everything on this game is going in the trash,” he said. “This is a very good football team. We have so much left to play for.” And there is truth in his words.

Golden Eagle football opens 2019 season Saturday vs. Samford

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – It’s hard to believe it’s been 12 years since Tennessee Tech last faced Samford on the gridiron. It was a completely different scenario then – the Golden Eagles were 32 years removed since their previous Ohio Valley Conference championship (Tech later broke its drought four years later) and both teams were under the direction of new coaches (Watson Brown for the Golden Eagles facing long-time assistant Pat Sullivan across the way – who went on to become Samford’s all-time winningest head coach. Now, Dewayne Alexander enters his second year at the helm of the Tennessee Tech program, while a familiar foe comes into Tucker Stadium leading Samford as former Murray State skipper Chris Hatcher enters his fifth campaign as the Bulldogs’ top dog. Tech will open its 98th football campaign Saturday night at 6 p.m. from Tucker Stadium.

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – It’s the midway point of Tennessee Tech football’s 2019 spring practice and as the team hosted its first scrimmage of the spring, there were definitely signs of improvement. Through the two-hour session on Saturday from Tucker Stadium, it looked like a midsummer scrimmage as if the team was getting set for the new season rather than being months away.
