2017 (Junior, medical redshirt): Josh missed the 2017 campaign after two medical issues arose. Poplar was awarded a single-digit under previous head coach Marcus Satterfield's program of a player-vote awarding the single-digit numbers to who they felt were the toughest members of the team.

2016 (Sophomore): Poplar had a breakout season for the Golden Eagles, becoming the team's leading tackler as he recorded 105 total tackles -- 40 solo and 65 unassisted. He also broke up a pass and recovered three fumbles for eight yards and forced two. One of those fumbles recovered was for a touchdown against Mercer. Poplar was named to the All-Ohio Valley Conference second team on defense.

2015 (R-Freshman): Poplar made 14 tackles last season, including four solo stops in seven games played. He also recorded one tackle-for-loss for one yard.

2014 (Freshman): Poplar was a member of the team in 2014 and spent his first season as a redshirt member of the scout team.

High School: A product of a solid football program at Knoxville Central High School, Josh was a four-year starter, one for coach Joel Helton and three for coach Joe Hassel...missed much of his junior year with a torn ACL, following an all-region season as a sophomore...twice named all-district...played running back and linebacker...competitive and versatile athlete, he also lettered four years in baseball and two in track & field...a sprinter, he competed in the 100m dash and 4x100m relay.

Personal: The son of Willie and Florence Scott Poplar...his father competed in two World Deaf Olympics (1969 and 1973) and is a member of the Knoxville Hall of Fame...born June 21, 1996 in Knoxville...full name is Joshua Taylor Zachary Poplar.

Academic: Majoring in business with an interest in health care administration…named to the Spring 2016 AD’s Honor Roll…named to the 2015-16 OVC Commissioner’s Honor Roll…awarded the OVC Academic Medal of Honor...Poplar was a 2016 CoSIDA Academic All-District selection.

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Josh Poplar is going to have to find some more room on his trophy shelf. On Friday, the Tennessee Tech linebacker was named one of 47 Football Championship Subdivision players on the FCS Athletic Directors Association’s 21st Annual Academic All-Star Team. He was also named as a finalist for the 18th Annual FCS ADA $5,000 Postgraduate Scholarship, which will be awarded to two student-athletes at the organization’s annual meeting in conjunction with the 2019 NACDA Convention in Orlando, Fla., June 10-12.

ROCHESTER, Minn. – The votes have been tabulated and as the final tally is recorded, Tennessee Tech redshirt junior Josh Poplar was named an honorable mention selection for the Mayo Clinic Comeback Player of the Year. The final voting was conducted among members of the College Sports Information Directors of America, The Associated Press and by the editors of Touchdown Illustrated. With the selection, Mayo Clinic will donate $2,500 into the general scholarship fund at Tech.

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – As Tennessee Tech closes its football season on Saturday, it will be a day of celebration as the Golden Eagles will honor 12 of its own in a Senior Day recognition. Tech hosts Eastern Kentucky in the finale with kickoff scheduled for 1:35 p.m. Roger Ealey and Grant Swallows will provide broadcast duties for 98.5 KISS FM and the Golden Eagle Sports Network, while Dylan Vazzano, Sam Brooks and Wayne Anderson will handle the task for WCTE and ESPN+ (subscription required).

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – With Austin Peay coming off of an open date after a frustrating Ohio Valley Conference loss at Southeast Missouri, the Tennessee Tech football team ran into a determined Governors squad looking to rebound on their Homecoming. While Tech did put together solid offensive numbers, APSU still put plenty of points on the board, taking a 41-10 victory over the Golden Eagles on Saturday. Bailey Fisher threw a 23-yard touchdown strike to David Gist and Nick Madonia kicked a 24-yard field goal and a PAT to complete Tech’s scoring.

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Several players had career nights as Tennessee Tech tried to make a tremendous comeback in the fourth quarter, but Eastern Illinois was able to capitalize on costly errors and its own passing game to take a 52-38 victory Saturday night at Tucker Stadium. Tech drops to 0-5 on the season, but the prognosis is definitely bright for the future. “We had a lot of great individual efforts tonight,” Tech head coach Dewayne Alexander said. “I still sit here and never question the effort of our young men. They kept playing to the very end. We go for an onside kick trying to win the football game. There were some great performances and these men right here played outstanding.”

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee Tech football team came out on fire Thursday night as it hosted No. 7 Kennesaw State, but the Owls put on a showcase of their triple-option offense, rolling to a 49-10 win over the Golden Eagles. It wasn’t all negatives for Tech (0-2) though. Freshman Bailey Fisher threw the first touchdown of his career, sending a five-yard strike to a wide-open Alex Carling. Fisher ended the game with 179 passing yards on 19-of-30 passing, while also rushing eight times for 38 yards.

IRVING, Texas – As the college football season began last week, thousands of student-athletes took to the field to begin another campaign. But nationally, 1,200 of those student-athletes had received their degrees and continued to wear their school colors proudly.
