Bio

2017 (Junior): Nick finished the 2017 campaign going 9-for-14 on field goal tries and a perfect 21-for-21 on extra points, leading the team in scoring with 48 points. His season longest field goal was 51 yards at Eastern Illinois in a game where he went 3-for-4 on field goal tries ... went 3-for-3 against Tennessee State ... went 4-for-4 on extra points against Austin Peay ... Madonia also punted the ball 62 times for 2,487 yards, an average of 40.1 yards per punt. His longest punt went 65 yards, while he pinned it inside the 20 21 times. He had 10 fair catches and five touchbacks ... named to the All-Ohio Valley Conference team as a second-team specialist.

2016 (Sophomore): Madonia moved up into the main kicker role for the Golden Eagles and excelled, completing 13 of his 16 field goal attempts and 33 of his 35 extra-point tries. After missing his first two of the season, Madonia hit eight straight field goals between the Austin Peay and Eastern Illinois contests before missing his first try at Tennessee State. But from that game on, he closed out the season with seven straight successful kicks -- including a school-record 57-yarder against the Tigers, the longest for the Golden Eagles since Ryan Weeks (1989) and Murray Cunningham (1974) kicked 53-yard completions. The kick was tied for the longest in the Football Championship Subdivision with TSU's Lane Clark, who kicked a 57-yarder earlier in the season.

Madonia was named to the All-Ohio Valley Conference team as a second-team specialist. He ended the campaign with a team-high 72 points, tied for the fifth most in school history in a single season behind Dontey Gay (90, 2011), Larry Shipp (90, 2007), Michael Penix (78, 1995) and Larry Schreiber (78, 1969) and tied with Josh Foster (72, 2004) and Jason Ballard (72, 2003).

2015 (Freshman): Madonia handled kickoff duties last season.

HIGH SCHOOL: A third-team All-Midstate selection, Nick Madonia was a kicker from Centennial High School with a strong leg and tremendous accuracy. The grandson of legendary Overton football coach Nick Coutras, Madonia connected on 9-of-13 field goal attempts in 2014, including a season-long 52-yarder in the Cougars' Week 6 win over Mt. Juliet. He also converted 47-of-49 extra-point attempts and averaged 35.4 yards on 41 punts, helping lead Centennial to a 10-3 record and the Class 6A quarterfinals. On kickoffs, he had 36 touchbacks. He scored 74 points as a senior, and finished his career with 252 total points. In his prep career, he was 31-for-43 on field goals.

PERSONAL: The son of Catrina Coutras and Frank Madonia...born February 25, 1997 in Nashville...ful name is Nicholas Michael Madonia...mother Catrina was a member of the Tennessee Tech dance team from 1983-1987.

ACADEMIC: Majoring in civil engineering…named to the Spring 2016 AD’s Honor Roll…named to the 2015-16 OVC Commissioner’s Honor Roll

HONORS: All-Ohio Valley Conference second team -- 2016; All-OVC second team -- 2017; All-OVC Preseason Team -- 2018

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – There were plenty of players that had standout performances for the Tennessee Tech football team this season, but if you were to single it down to the one player that probably meant the most to the Golden Eagles in the 2018 campaign, senior kicker/punter Nick Madonia would be the overwhelming response. The numbers he put up, the situations he faced and the leadership he provided were evident all season, and it made him an easy selection for the 2018 Robert Hill Johnson Award winner. The award, the Tech football team’s highest honor, is voted on by his teammates.

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – When Tennessee Tech and Eastern Illinois lock horns this weekend in Tucker Stadium, something’s going to have to give. Both teams are entering the contest with identical 0-4 records and an 0-1 mark in the Ohio Valley Conference. And while Eastern Illinois may not necessarily look like the same team as during the Tony Romo or Jimmy Garoppolo days, the Panthers are still very good offensively, which makes Saturday’s contest the very definition of a trap game.

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – What a difference a week makes. Tech’s defensive units then put together some great stops, resulting in seven drives with nothing to show for the offense. Brian Thompson picked off a pass, while Andrew Swicegood and Chris Tucker came away with sacks.

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – As the Tennessee Tech football team finished the first full week of fall camp, the Golden Eagles closed out Saturday with their first scrimmage. It was nowhere near perfect – not that was expected this early into camp – but it did give the Golden Eagles an idea where to go next as they continue their preparations for the 2018 campaign. “We’re making a lot of progress,” said Tech head coach Dewayne Alexander. “We did a lot of good things, but we still have a lot to do. We threw a lot of situations at them over the last few practices – certain areas of the field, two-minute drills, backed up, red zone, 3rd and long, 3rd and short. There’s a lot of stuff we’re still installing, and the nature of it – you’re throwing a lot of stuff in, after day two or three it starts running together.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Tennessee Tech head football coach Dewayne Alexander knew exactly what the gravity of the situation was as he was coming into his first Ohio Valley Conference Football Media Day as the leader of the Golden Eagles. After a 1-10 season last year, a last-place projection was pretty much expected. However, that doesn’t mean Alexander and his Tech players are going to be complacent with the ninth-place pick.
