Bio
2017 (Junior): Nick finished the 2017 campaign going 9-for-14 on field goal tries and a perfect 21-for-21 on extra points, leading the team in scoring with 48 points. His season longest field goal was 51 yards at Eastern Illinois in a game where he went 3-for-4 on field goal tries ... went 3-for-3 against Tennessee State ... went 4-for-4 on extra points against Austin Peay ... Madonia also punted the ball 62 times for 2,487 yards, an average of 40.1 yards per punt. His longest punt went 65 yards, while he pinned it inside the 20 21 times. He had 10 fair catches and five touchbacks ... named to the All-Ohio Valley Conference team as a second-team specialist.
2016 (Sophomore): Madonia moved up into the main kicker role for the Golden Eagles and excelled, completing 13 of his 16 field goal attempts and 33 of his 35 extra-point tries. After missing his first two of the season, Madonia hit eight straight field goals between the Austin Peay and Eastern Illinois contests before missing his first try at Tennessee State. But from that game on, he closed out the season with seven straight successful kicks -- including a school-record 57-yarder against the Tigers, the longest for the Golden Eagles since Ryan Weeks (1989) and Murray Cunningham (1974) kicked 53-yard completions. The kick was tied for the longest in the Football Championship Subdivision with TSU's Lane Clark, who kicked a 57-yarder earlier in the season.
Madonia was named to the All-Ohio Valley Conference team as a second-team specialist. He ended the campaign with a team-high 72 points, tied for the fifth most in school history in a single season behind Dontey Gay (90, 2011), Larry Shipp (90, 2007), Michael Penix (78, 1995) and Larry Schreiber (78, 1969) and tied with Josh Foster (72, 2004) and Jason Ballard (72, 2003).
2015 (Freshman): Madonia handled kickoff duties last season.
HIGH SCHOOL: A third-team All-Midstate selection, Nick Madonia was a kicker from Centennial High School with a strong leg and tremendous accuracy. The grandson of legendary Overton football coach Nick Coutras, Madonia connected on 9-of-13 field goal attempts in 2014, including a season-long 52-yarder in the Cougars' Week 6 win over Mt. Juliet. He also converted 47-of-49 extra-point attempts and averaged 35.4 yards on 41 punts, helping lead Centennial to a 10-3 record and the Class 6A quarterfinals. On kickoffs, he had 36 touchbacks. He scored 74 points as a senior, and finished his career with 252 total points. In his prep career, he was 31-for-43 on field goals.

News mentions
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – There were plenty of players that had standout performances for the Tennessee Tech football team this season, but if you were to single it down to the one player that probably meant the most to the Golden Eagles in the 2018 campaign, senior kicker/punter Nick Madonia would be the overwhelming response. The numbers he put up, the situations he faced and the leadership he provided were evident all season, and it made him an easy selection for the 2018 Robert Hill Johnson Award winner. The award, the Tech football team’s highest honor, is voted on by his teammates.
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee Tech football team closed out its 2018 season falling to Eastern Kentucky 37-6 on Saturday afternoon at Tucker Stadium. Tech finishes with a 1-10 record, 1-7 in the Ohio Valley Conference, but despite the record, the foundation has been built towards future success, starting with the 12 seniors honored before the game.
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – As Tennessee Tech closes its football season on Saturday, it will be a day of celebration as the Golden Eagles will honor 12 of its own in a Senior Day recognition. Tech hosts Eastern Kentucky in the finale with kickoff scheduled for 1:35 p.m. Roger Ealey and Grant Swallows will provide broadcast duties for 98.5 KISS FM and the Golden Eagle Sports Network, while Dylan Vazzano, Sam Brooks and Wayne Anderson will handle the task for WCTE and ESPN+ (subscription required).
MARTIN, Tenn. – The Tennessee Tech football team knew that whichever team came out the fastest on Saturday was going to have the upper hand. Unfortunately, it was UT Martin that did just that, and while the Golden Eagles rallied in the second quarter, the Skyhawks were able to hold on to a 38-13 victory at Hardy M. Graham Stadium. For the Golden Eagles, though, it was Andrew Goldsmith’s day. The junior from Jackson got another appearance in front of his hometown crowd and made plenty of noise, rushing for two touchdowns and 60 yards on 16 carries, while also catching three passes for 14 yards.

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – It’s simple to type out the result, describe the big plays and just simply knock out a game story. But Tennessee Tech’s 27-24 win over Murray State on Saturday wasn’t just any other game. This was a statement, evidence in what head coach Dewayne Alexander planned to achieve with the Golden Eagles as he earned his first win as Tech's coach.
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – In recent years, Homecoming has been a good day for the Tennessee Tech football team with the Golden Eagles winning three of the last four annual contests. The 2018 Tech squad is hoping for similar fortune on Saturday as Murray State comes to town for the Golden Eagles’ 88th Homecoming game. Kickoff from Tucker Stadium is scheduled for 1:35 p.m.
CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – With Austin Peay coming off of an open date after a frustrating Ohio Valley Conference loss at Southeast Missouri, the Tennessee Tech football team ran into a determined Governors squad looking to rebound on their Homecoming. While Tech did put together solid offensive numbers, APSU still put plenty of points on the board, taking a 41-10 victory over the Golden Eagles on Saturday. Bailey Fisher threw a 23-yard touchdown strike to David Gist and Nick Madonia kicked a 24-yard field goal and a PAT to complete Tech’s scoring.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – If Tennessee Tech could find a way to put its fourth-quarter production to work for an entire 60 minutes, the Golden Eagles might be onto something. A couple of costly turnovers early saw Tennessee State build momentum early and Micheal Hughes made the Golden Eagles pay, leading the Tigers to a 41-14 Homecoming win at Nissan Stadium on Saturday evening. Tech fell to 0-7 on the season, 0-4 in Ohio Valley Conference play, while the Tigers improve to 3-3, 2-2 in the league.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – With the open date now out of the way, the Tennessee Tech football team is looking to close out the final five weeks of the 2018 season on a high note. Especially since the Golden Eagles still have plenty to play for. In the final five contests, three of the games encompass Tech’s run for the Sergeant York Trophy, starting with Saturday’s contest against Tennessee State.
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. -- Nick Madonia has already made some marks into the Tennessee Tech record book. Now he’s trying to earn one of the highest honors for a collegiate kicker. Madonia was named to the first watch list for the Fred Mitchell Award, which honors the most outstanding kicker in the Division I Football Championship Subdivision, Division II, Division III and NAIA levels.
BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – Tennessee Tech senior kicker Nick Madonia was named the Ohio Valley Conference’s Specialist of the Week on Sunday, following the weekly vote by the league’s sports information contacts. Madonia kicked a 52-yard field goal during Saturday’s contest against Southeast Missouri, giving him field goals of 54 at Utah State, 53 yards at Jacksonville State and 52 against the Redhawks for the three longest field goals in the Football Championship Subdivision this season.
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – While it was a tough night on Saturday for the Tennessee Tech football team in a 70-38 defeat at the hands of Southeast Missouri, the freshmen Golden Eagles made a night of it. Freshman David Gist, a local product out of Cookeville High, ran for two touchdowns and 108 yards on five carries, averaging 21.6 yards per carry. It was the first individual 100-rushing-yard game for the Golden Eagles since Andrew Goldsmith ran for 101 yards against Tennessee State last season.
Nick Madonia stands a few yards back behind his teammates. He lines up the kick, blocking out anything else. There is the holder, the ball, him and the goalposts. On the attempt, 54 yards stand between Madonia and a lead against their Football Bowl Subdivision foes from Utah State on its home field. The crowd noise from 24,000 of his opposing fans chanting to their team to block his kick, it may as well be silence to the senior from Arrington, Tenn. After all, he wasn’t worried.
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Nearing the halfway point of the 2018 season and the Tennessee Tech football team has seen a consistent stream of improvement from week to week. Now the Golden Eagles just have to find ways to convert that into wins. Tech (0-5, 0-2 Ohio Valley Conference) will try to find its way into the victory column this week as the Golden Eagles play host to Southeast Missouri (2-2, 0-1 OVC) on Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. from Tucker Stadium.
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – When Tennessee Tech and Eastern Illinois lock horns this weekend in Tucker Stadium, something’s going to have to give. Both teams are entering the contest with identical 0-4 records and an 0-1 mark in the Ohio Valley Conference. And while Eastern Illinois may not necessarily look like the same team as during the Tony Romo or Jimmy Garoppolo days, the Panthers are still very good offensively, which makes Saturday’s contest the very definition of a trap game.
JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – It’s easy to look at wins and losses to measure a team, but there’s a lot more to consider than just a tally in a column. Even though the Tennessee Tech football team took a 48-20 defeat at No. 9 Jacksonville State on Saturday night, there is no denying that the team has improved and continues to get better.
LOGAN, Utah – Nick Madonia nailed a career-high four field goals and narrowly missed a fifth Thursday night as the Tennessee Tech football team wrapped up the non-conference portion of its schedule at Utah State, falling 73-12 to the Aggies. Against the Football Bowl Subdivision team, the Golden Eagles saw some flashes with a couple of crucial defensive stops, then got a couple of big offensive plays. However, Tech (0-3) just could not find pay dirt when it came to the end zone.
LOGAN, Utah – When Tennessee Tech loads up the planes on Wednesday and heads across the country to take on Utah State on Thursday night, the goal still remains the same – try to come back with a win. Tech takes on the Aggies at 7 p.m. CT time from Merlin Olsen Field at Maverik Stadium. The game will be streamed live on Facebook via Stadium (www.facebook.com/StadiumCollegeFootball) with Ari Wolf, Darius Walker, Kristen Balboni and Paige Zamora providing the call and sideline coverage. Roger Ealey and Dylan Vazzano will broadcast the game live on the Golden Eagle Sports Network on 98.5 KISS FM.
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee Tech football team came out on fire Thursday night as it hosted No. 7 Kennesaw State, but the Owls put on a showcase of their triple-option offense, rolling to a 49-10 win over the Golden Eagles. It wasn’t all negatives for Tech (0-2) though. Freshman Bailey Fisher threw the first touchdown of his career, sending a five-yard strike to a wide-open Alex Carling. Fisher ended the game with 179 passing yards on 19-of-30 passing, while also rushing eight times for 38 yards.
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Despite the 34-10 score as the Tennessee Tech-Chattanooga game stretched from Thursday night into Friday morning as the game had a 2:45 minute lightning delay, there were still positives for the Golden Eagles to build on. Tech (0-1) returns to action on Thursday night as it hosts Kennesaw State (0-1) in a nationally televised game on ESPNU.
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – What a difference a week makes. After a good showing in their first scrimmage of fall camp, the Tennessee Tech football team put together a much improved effort on the field on Sunday. While there’s still some kinks to work out, there was still plenty for head coach Dewayne Alexander to be happy about. Deven Sullivan scored on the first drive of the day, scoring from four yards out. Tech’s defensive units then put together some great stops, resulting in seven drives with nothing to show for the offense. Brian Thompson picked off a pass, while Andrew Swicegood and Chris Tucker came away with sacks.
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – As the Tennessee Tech football team finished the first full week of fall camp, the Golden Eagles closed out Saturday with their first scrimmage. It was nowhere near perfect – not that was expected this early into camp – but it did give the Golden Eagles an idea where to go next as they continue their preparations for the 2018 campaign. “We’re making a lot of progress,” said Tech head coach Dewayne Alexander. “We did a lot of good things, but we still have a lot to do. We threw a lot of situations at them over the last few practices – certain areas of the field, two-minute drills, backed up, red zone, 3rd and long, 3rd and short. There’s a lot of stuff we’re still installing, and the nature of it – you’re throwing a lot of stuff in, after day two or three it starts running together.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Tennessee Tech head football coach Dewayne Alexander knew exactly what the gravity of the situation was as he was coming into his first Ohio Valley Conference Football Media Day as the leader of the Golden Eagles. After a 1-10 season last year, a last-place projection was pretty much expected. However, that doesn’t mean Alexander and his Tech players are going to be complacent with the ninth-place pick.
