News mentions
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. -- For all of the experienced coaches that Tennessee Tech head football coach Dewayne Alexander is bringing on to his Golden Eagle staff, there?s also some exciting young coaches ready to make their mark. Without a doubt, Adam Mims is going to make one.
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Tennessee Tech graduate wide receiver Dontez Byrd received another honor on Wednesday as he was named to HERO Sports’ Football Championship Subdivision All-American team on the third-team roster. Byrd, who was most recently named the football team’s Robert Hill Johnson Award winner for the 2017 season, became the first Golden Eagle receiver to catch passes for more than 1,000 yards in a single season.
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – There’s one thing wide receiver Dontez Byrd did when he came to Tennessee Tech. He dominated. Through the course of his two seasons, he put together the two best single years receiving in program history, breaking his own receiving yards and catches records in the 2017 campaign. He also became the first Tech receiver to catch passes for 1,000 yards in a single season. With his 2017 numbers, leading the Golden Eagle offense and setting a new single-season pinnacle for success, it’s no surprise that Byrd was an overwhelming choice for the Robert Hill Johnson Award, which will be presented to the Tech senior during Thursday’s home women’s basketball game.
BRENTWOOD, Tenn. -- The contributions that senior wide receiver Dontez Byrd and junior kicker/punter Nick Madonia brought to the Tennessee Tech football team are very familiar to Golden Eagle football fans. They certainly didn't go unrecognized by the rest of the conference either. As the Ohio Valley Conference released its annual All-OVC postseason honors, the Golden Eagles garnered a first-team offense nod for Byrd and a second-team specialist for Madonia.
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – And the 2017 season is in the books. The Tennessee Tech football team honored its senior class and saw one of those reach new heights. As the final buzzer sounded, the 24-0 loss to UT Martin wasn’t important. For head coach Marcus Satterfield and his staff, his Golden Eagle players, their eyes were on the future.
In his short career at Tennessee Tech, there’s no question that Dontez Byrd has made quite an impact. In each of his two seasons as a Golden Eagle, he has broken the program’s single-season receiving yardage record. He enters Saturday’s game needing two catches to break his own record set in 2016 and just 24 yards to become the first Tech receiver to haul in 1,000 yards for a single season. In just two seasons, Byrd has risen all the way up to sixth on the Tech career receiving yardage list with 1,909 yards and a game to play. While he may not be able to reach the career heights set by Tim Benford (3,097, 774.25 per season), Larry Shipp (2,950, 737.5 per season), Craig Rolle (2,813, 703.25 per season), Byrd still has put some impressive numbers on the charts. Byrd has averaged 954.5 yards in his two seasons, and, in a theoretical four-year career with the Golden Eagles, could have reached nearly 3,818 yards.
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Dontez Byrd and Elliott Normand have both been masters of their craft on the gridiron, but, on Wednesday, they were rewarded for their efforts in the classroom. Byrd and Normand were selected to the College Sports Information Directors of America Academic All-District team for District 3, which includes colleges and universities in North Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia, and was voted on by CoSIDA members.

Saturday's game starts at 1:30 p.m. The game will be broadcast by ESPN3 as the Ohio Valley Conference's Game of the Week with Kevin Ingram and Bob Belvin providing the call. COOKEVILLE, Tenn. -- As the 2017 campaign winds into the home stretch, the Tennessee Tech football team looks to finish strong with a run at the Sergeant York Trophy, starting with this week's Ohio Valley Conference contest against Tennessee State. The Golden Eagles have won the last two meetings with the Tigers and will try to make it three straight wins for the first time since 2000-2002. Kickoff on Saturday from Tucker Stadium is scheduled for 1:34 p.m.
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Southeast Missouri put two scores on the board quickly and that turned out to be all the homestanding Redhawks needed on Saturday afternoon, beating Tennessee Tech 31-3 at Houck Field. With the loss, the Golden Eagles fall to 0-7, 0-4 in the Ohio Valley Conference play.
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. -- In the midst of a tough start, the Tennessee Tech football team continues to push on, ready to hit the road once again as they head to Cape Girardeau, Mo., to take on Southeast Missouri for a 1 p.m. Ohio Valley Conference contest on Saturday. Despite the 0-6 start to the season, there's still several things for the Golden Eagles to play for as the 2017 campaign winds down, but the focus this week is trying to get that first win under their belts -- and the Redhawks are a good opportunity to attempt that. In the teams' 25 meetings, the Golden Eagles hold a 15-10 record, including winning seven of the last 10 contests.
CHARLESTON, Ill. – With the way Nick Madonia was kicking the ball on Saturday, there was no doubt that he was the player that head coach Marcus Satterfield wanted in the potential game-winning situation. There were just 10.2 seconds remaining. Madonia was lined up to attempt a 49-yard field goal. Surely, it was nothing – he had already kicked a 51-yarder into the wind earlier to try to keep the Tennessee Tech football team on top.
CHARLESTON, Ill. – Through his presentations and conferences this week, Tennessee Tech head coach Marcus Satterfield has said continuously that while the Golden Eagles have an 0-5 record through the start of the 2017 campaign, there’s still six games remaining on the schedule. The Golden Eagles certainly still have plenty to play for as they head to Charleston, Ill., this week for an Ohio Valley Conference showdown with Eastern Illinois on Saturday.
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Earlier in the week, Tennessee Tech head coach Marcus Satterfield challenged senior wide receiver Dontez Byrd to provide more leadership. And considering the numbers Byrd put up on Saturday night against FCS No. 5 Jacksonville State, it’s safe to assume that the senior listened. Byrd caught six passes for 92 yards and a touchdown to lead the Golden Eagles, but the effort came up short as the defending Ohio Valley Conference champions defeated Tech 34-7 at Tucker Stadium.

What a lot of fans don’t see is how strong the Tech graduate student is in the classroom. Byrd is getting some recognition for that, named as one of 181 semifinalists for the National Football Foundation’s William V. Campbell Trophy, which recognized the top football scholar-athlete in the nation.
RICHMOND, Ky. -- With the number of turnovers the Tennessee Tech football team committed on Saturday night, it would have been hard for any team to overcome that adversity. Still the Golden Eagles found a way, rallying in the fourth quarter, and even had a chance to win it. But false start penalties proved costly, running crucial time off the clock and Eastern Kentucky ruined any chance of a Tech comeback win, sacking Andre Sale for the final of the contest and sealing a 24-21 defeat.
Andre Sale has always found a way to roll with the punches and adapt when the situation calls for it. Even from a young age, the Tech quarterback has been able to do that, moving from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, to Little Rock, Arkansas, as a child following Hurricane Katrina. But all he ever wanted was a chance to prove himself, one that he’s getting now as a redshirt freshman, starting behind center for the Golden Eagles.

MUNCIE, Ind. – For the Tennessee Tech football team, preseason is officially over. KENNESAW, Ga. – In the second half, the Tennessee Tech football team looked like a different team. The first half saw costly turnovers in the red zone, too many big plays and some penalties that slowed things down a bit. But in the second half – more specifically the fourth quarter – the Golden Eagles showed some promise, outscoring Kennesaw State 14-3 in the final two periods.
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – If anything was true for the Tennessee Tech football team on Thursday night, it was definitely a learning experience. Squaring off with the FCS No. 25-ranked Western Illinois Leathernecks, the Golden Eagles had a tough time putting together offense against a tough defense. However, there were plenty of positives for Tech to continue to build on following the 41-14 loss at Tucker Stadium.
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – All the weeks of grit, work and sweat have culminated in this. As the coin is flipped and the first ball is kicked off, the season will have begun for the Tennessee Tech football team as the Golden Eagles host Western Illinois on Thursday night. The game is scheduled for a 6:04 p.m. kickoff.
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – With some sun and heat instead of the dark and rain, Saturday’s football scrimmage at Tucker Stadium saw a lot more positives for the Tennessee Tech football team. There were fewer mistakes, more explosive plays and plenty to make Golden Eagle fans salivate about the start of the 2017 campaign.
