Mims joins Tech football staff as receivers coach

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Tennessee Tech graduate wide receiver Dontez Byrd received another honor on Wednesday as he was named to HERO Sports’ Football Championship Subdivision All-American team on the third-team roster. Byrd, who was most recently named the football team’s Robert Hill Johnson Award winner for the 2017 season, became the first Golden Eagle receiver to catch passes for more than 1,000 yards in a single season.

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – There’s one thing wide receiver Dontez Byrd did when he came to Tennessee Tech. He dominated. Through the course of his two seasons, he put together the two best single years receiving in program history, breaking his own receiving yards and catches records in the 2017 campaign. He also became the first Tech receiver to catch passes for 1,000 yards in a single season. With his 2017 numbers, leading the Golden Eagle offense and setting a new single-season pinnacle for success, it’s no surprise that Byrd was an overwhelming choice for the Robert Hill Johnson Award, which will be presented to the Tech senior during Thursday’s home women’s basketball game.

BRENTWOOD, Tenn. -- The contributions that senior wide receiver Dontez Byrd and junior kicker/punter Nick Madonia brought to the Tennessee Tech football team are very familiar to Golden Eagle football fans. They certainly didn't go unrecognized by the rest of the conference either. As the Ohio Valley Conference released its annual All-OVC postseason honors, the Golden Eagles garnered a first-team offense nod for Byrd and a second-team specialist for Madonia.

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – And the 2017 season is in the books. The Tennessee Tech football team honored its senior class and saw one of those reach new heights. As the final buzzer sounded, the 24-0 loss to UT Martin wasn’t important. For head coach Marcus Satterfield and his staff, his Golden Eagle players, their eyes were on the future.

AIMING HIGH: Dontez Byrd takes advantage of opportunity at Tech

In his short career at Tennessee Tech, there’s no question that Dontez Byrd has made quite an impact. In each of his two seasons as a Golden Eagle, he has broken the program’s single-season receiving yardage record. He enters Saturday’s game needing two catches to break his own record set in 2016 and just 24 yards to become the first Tech receiver to haul in 1,000 yards for a single season. In just two seasons, Byrd has risen all the way up to sixth on the Tech career receiving yardage list with 1,909 yards and a game to play. While he may not be able to reach the career heights set by Tim Benford (3,097, 774.25 per season), Larry Shipp (2,950, 737.5 per season), Craig Rolle (2,813, 703.25 per season), Byrd still has put some impressive numbers on the charts. Byrd has averaged 954.5 yards in his two seasons, and, in a theoretical four-year career with the Golden Eagles, could have reached nearly 3,818 yards.

RICHMOND, Ky. -- With the number of turnovers the Tennessee Tech football team committed on Saturday night, it would have been hard for any team to overcome that adversity. Still the Golden Eagles found a way, rallying in the fourth quarter, and even had a chance to win it. But false start penalties proved costly, running crucial time off the clock and Eastern Kentucky ruined any chance of a Tech comeback win, sacking Andre Sale for the final of the contest and sealing a 24-21 defeat.

Andre Sale has always found a way to roll with the punches and adapt when the situation calls for it. Even from a young age, the Tech quarterback has been able to do that, moving from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, to Little Rock, Arkansas, as a child following Hurricane Katrina. But all he ever wanted was a chance to prove himself, one that he’s getting now as a redshirt freshman, starting behind center for the Golden Eagles.
